Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Series I’ve Been Meaning to Start but Just Haven’t Yet

June 20, 2017

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week the prompt is series I’ve been meaning to read but just haven’t gotten to yet. There are SO MANY series! For many of the series on my TBR I am actually in the middle of them right now (Oops…), but I decided those didn’t count for this post. So instead, I give you ten series I for some reason I just never pick up. It was hard to narrow down the list!

All titles below are links to the series Goodreads page for all books in that particular series.

10 Series I’ve Been Meaning to Read but Just Haven’t Gotten to Yet

If you read my reviews at all, then you know I don’t start a series until all the books are out. Why? Because I can’t keep all the darn details in my brain. I need to be able to binge read them if I can. So, most of the series below are incomplete at this time, but that doesn’t mean I want to read them any less! Without further ado…

The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

The Kingkiller Chronicle comes to mind first because Rothfuss’s writing has inspired my significant other’s writing so much– and I’m almost frustrated I haven’t read it yet. My other half is constantly making references to this series (I doubt he even notices) so I feel left out, for sure. Hurry up and finish, Rothfuss!

Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson

I’m pretty sure that no fantasy fan needs an introduction to this series. It’s one of my biggest pet peeves that Sanderson has about eighty-gagillion series he’s in the middle of writing. The only books of his I’ve read are The Reckoner’s trilogy and his Wheel of time books. I only recently learned that this series is COMPLETED. There is a second Mistborn trilogy being written, but they are separate. My grubby paws cannot wait!

Extraordinary Voyages by Jules Verne

It’s hard to believe I’ve never read a single Jules Verne book, actually. I think about them more often than most classic lit novels. But I hold myself back thinking I might not enjoy them! These are more-or-less steampunk adventure stories rom the 19th century. What could I dislike? 😉

Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb

I’m pretty sure this trilogy is ALSO on every Top Fantasy Series list in the world. Why I haven’t picked this one up yet? Pure forgetfulness. That’s all it is… But man, do I want to dig into this world!

The Edge by Ilona Andrews

My ventures into paranormal fiction happen occasionally. Mostly spurred on by my mother. My mother has awesome taste in mysteries. But sometimes, I’m just not in the mood for paranormal fiction. That said, The Edge is her favorite paranormal fiction series, so I *must* look into it some day!

The Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan

I adore Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson books, so when a spin off series was being published I jumped at it. Alas– the second book was only recently published and this is a seies of 5. It looks like I’m waiting.

Graceling Realm by Kristin Cashore

This story calls to me. It’s like the ocean to my Moana. A tale of one of the king’s nieces born with an extreme skill– only her skill is killing others. Obviously there will be murder, intrigue, and romance. Yes please!

Temeraire by Naomi Novik

My favorite book club is my Kids Lit book club. The women in that group just click so well with me– they are some of the most important people in my life. When Rebecca recommended this series, I knew I’d have to read them all. but there are NINE books in this series! Oy. I’ll start it one summer when I’m feeling like a commitment. But I can’t wait to read this. Napoleon’s dragons?! Yes please!

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

Sometimes, even I want to read some fluffy pop literature. I’ve been waiting for Lola and the Boy Next Door to come in from the library forever. Once I get through that series, I’ll be tackling this one next.

Little House by Laura Ingalls Wilder

For #AnneReadAlong2017, I’ve rekindled a part of my childhood I thought might be long gone. As a child, I was never really interested in reading the Little House books. But, now that I am in love with Anne Shirley they suddenly appeal to me…

Anything by Mercedes Lackey

With so many series to her name, Bard’s Tale, Five Hundred Kingdoms,  Brainship, Dragon Jousters… etc… it’s a shock I’ve never read Lackey’s fantasy.I have never picked up a Lackey book because of one silly reason: the covers. Those covers are so corny and tacky… I just can’t get past them. I know that there is a place in the world for kitschy 70’s fantasy covers– but I just can’t get into them. That said, the world always has amazing things to say about her fantasy books. And who am I to judge a book by it’s cover?

What do you think?

  • Have you read any of these series? What do you think? Where should I start?
  • What series above are on your To Read list?
  • What is the next new series you want to start reading?
  • Any other completed series you think I should consider for my TBR?

The Mistborn series is fantastic. I have the first book on Kindle if you’d like me to loan it to you! <3

    • Jackie B June 20, 2017 at 8:54 am

You are so good to me! I have a physical copy a friend lent me, but I don’t want to take it to Croatia just in case. I’d *love* to borrow your Kindle version for our trip! I have no idea how to even do that…

  • Bookish Realm June 20, 2017 at 10:44 am

The Mistborn Series is amazing!! You definitely need to check it out. I still have only read the first book, but I loved it.

    • Jackie B June 20, 2017 at 10:54 am

I’m so glad to hear that! Everyone has had rave reviews for it, it seems. There is something about Sanderson’s writing which is so incredibly gripping! Do you plan on finishing the series?

  • LairOfBooks June 20, 2017 at 11:27 am

Lol, we share the same reasoning for holding off on The Kingkiller Chronicles smh. It’s too long of a wait to remember all the details by the time the next one drops, my current dilemma with Game of Thrones. I read book 1 in the Mistborn trilogy & LOVED it but i got sidetracked with new releases & never got back to them *for shame* haha! Hobb, Cashore, and Han are all at the top of my TBR as well *wishes for more time* Great list Jackie! <3 <3 <3

    • Jackie B June 20, 2017 at 4:13 pm

EXACTLY. I ran into that problem with The Wheel of Time back in the 90’s and I have been cured of reading incomplete series since that moment. There is nothing worse than having to re-read 11 books in order to start the end of the series. O_o

Don’t we all need more time? I hope that I can get Mistborn read soon! I’m super excited for it! 😀

  • Mariela Silva June 20, 2017 at 11:53 am

I just bought the Mistborn Trilogy on a Facebook “yardsale”, and I am very excited to start these books soon!
    My TTT.

    • Jackie B June 20, 2017 at 1:40 pm

This is the first I’ve heard of Facebook yard sales– my life has been changed. Hopefully, we will both find joy in these books. 🙂 Thanks for sharing and stopping by, Mariela!

  • Sarah @ Reviews and Readathons June 20, 2017 at 12:43 pm

While none of these made my Top Ten Tuesday list, I’ve been meaning to read several, or at least pick up A series of specific authors. The Kingkiller Chronicles, books by Robin Hobb, Graceling, and Temeraire are all on my radar. The problem is that I just keep starting series…and then realizing they aren’t finished yet! Great list!! I actually participated today (trying to get back in the swing of blogging), so feel free to come by & take a look! 🙂

    • Jackie B June 20, 2017 at 1:15 pm

Exactly! I just cannot be bothered to pick up a series if it isn’t completed, I forget everything. So I often leave behind amazing series as the hype dies out over the course of the series. It’s a shame, but it’s also part of the game, I guess. There will never be a shortage of amazing books for me to read. And I am extremely grateful for this! I think if I had to pick up one of these series first it might be Graceling. I just want something a bit easier to read this summer. 🙂

I can’t wait to check out your TtT. Thanks for stopping by, Sarah!

  • Anna @MyBookishDream June 20, 2017 at 1:05 pm

I really want to read The Kingkiller Chronicles as well, I’m just waiting for the last book to be published. I really don’t want to read the first two book and then have to wait AGES until the last one is finished. 🙂
I also really want to read Mistborn, or rather anything by Brandon Sanderson, after all everyone who loves fantasy recommends his books. But it’s really frustrating that he is in the middle of so many series, I can only imagine how hard it is to wait for him to publish the next book!
    Great list Jackie! 😀

    • Jackie B June 20, 2017 at 1:38 pm

EXACTLY. I learned that the hard way when I started reading The Wheel of Time. Oy. So many years passed between when I read the first book and when Sanderson published the final book in Jordan’s place. O_o

I learned today that BOTH Mistborn trilogies are completed! You can read either one of them by themselves, but, obviously, they are recommended in order. I also really enjoyed his YA series The Reckoners and I’ve heard great things about Elantris, which is his stand alone. But, so many books, so little time… 😉

      • Anna @MyBookishDream June 23, 2017 at 1:21 pm

Oh my God! It sounds horrible to wait that long. Sometimes it’s best to just wait for all the books to be released and then not have that problem. Though sometimes I just can’t help myself and have to start a series immediately! XD
It’s amazing that both Mistborn trilogies are complete, I definitely need to check them out soon! Hahaha, I think the “too many books too little time” is always relevant to us book lovers!

  • Laila@BigReadingLife June 20, 2017 at 1:18 pm

I’ve never read the entire Little House series either. I wasn’t interested in them as a kid, but have read the first two as an adult. I think I’d like to continue someday.

It’s funny, when I think series I want to read, all the ones that pop into my mind are mysteries! There are quite a few: SJ (Sharon) Bolton’s series, Dennis Lehane’s, all the Agatha Christie’s I haven’t read, the rest of Ruth Rendell’s Wexford series… I could go on. I don’t ever read series books one right after another – I have too many things to read to do that. So it takes me years to complete a series.

    • Jackie B June 20, 2017 at 1:43 pm

That’s a good enough recommendation for me! 😉 Honestly, there are so many series I’ve started but never finished over the years. A handful are because they weren’t worth continuing, but there are quite a few I’ve just let time wash away. Thanks to Goodreads I can keep track of all that now!

Oooh– I didn’t even think of Mysteries! I really enjoy Poirot, but I bet I’d like Miss Marple more, actually. There’s something about a female protagonist in mystery novels which I adore. I don’t read enough mysteries. I love that you can just pick one up in the “middle” of the story and still enjoy it. Any mysteries in particular you’d recommend?

      • Laila@BigReadingLife June 20, 2017 at 2:38 pm

I really like Ruth Rendell’s mysteries – she’s got some really creepy psychological standalone mysteries that are just brilliant. The Crocodile Bird is probably my favorite of those. And her series with Inspector Wexford is very good – some are better than others of course, like any series. But the main character is a good one and it’s easy to leave those for a few months and come back to them. Wolf to the Slaughter and Shake Hands Forever are my favorites I think. So far. I’ve only read 15 of them! There are 24. 🙂

  • Destiny @ Howling Libraries June 20, 2017 at 1:39 pm

Great list! I almost put The Kingkiller Chronicles on my list, too. It sounds like such a good series!

    Here is my list!

    • Jackie B June 21, 2017 at 9:44 am

There are so many great series I haven’t read, it was hard to just stop here! But if I put together a list of series I’ve started and never finished… well, that would become an even LONGER list.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting, Destiny!

  • Birdie June 20, 2017 at 2:30 pm

The Name of the Wind is on my list too. 😀
The Edge is the only Ilona Andrews series that I’ve yet to start. I heard it switches couples, like a Paranormal Romance, which isn’t my favorite setup. I’ll read them eventually.

    • Jackie B June 20, 2017 at 4:15 pm

So you enjoy her other books, then? That’s great to know! It’s always nice to hear someone else recommend a book initially recommended by your mom. 😉

      • Birdie June 20, 2017 at 6:37 pm

Well, it sure sounds like your mom has great taste. 😀

        • Jackie B June 21, 2017 at 12:45 pm

Perfect! It’s been moved up my list then. 😀

        • Jackie B June 21, 2017 at 12:45 pm

Oh, and I’ll let her know you think that. 😉

  • Annemieke June 20, 2017 at 2:38 pm

Temeraire is so long, yes. I also have Kingkiller and Mistborn on my list. I recently binge read the Farseers trilogy and really liked it!

    • Jackie B June 21, 2017 at 9:43 am

I *love* binge reading series! That makes me super happy that you binge read, too. There’s something so satisfying about experiencing a series in on fell swoop. I might need to bump Fareer up now!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting, Annemieke!

      • Annemieke June 23, 2017 at 5:38 am

I don’t often binge read but I could not put Farseers down!

  • Donna June 20, 2017 at 3:18 pm

I had no idea there was a fourth Edge book so thank you for the heads up on that! I’ve inlcuded Graceling and Temeraire on my list too – I have them, just never read them! Great list! My TTT (apologies if the link doesn’t work!)

    • Jackie B June 20, 2017 at 3:40 pm

No problem. 😉 I’m glad I can spread the ever growing length of series! 😀

I use the library mostly, but it must be so frustrating to own a series and now have read them… Do you own both whole series, or just the first books?

      • Donna June 20, 2017 at 4:12 pm

My mum has all the Temeraire books I think, so they’re easily obtainable. Graceling I have the first two I think – one in paperback and the other on kindle (which is also confusing!). I use the library a lot but it tends to pick up random things rather than looking for specific books. I did once trawl the entire place looking for two books from The Raven Cycle which the computer said they had – turned out they were in the children’s section!

        • Jackie B June 21, 2017 at 1:41 pm

I also use the library a ton– it is my savior, as I have very few dollars to build my collection of books. Only the most loved join the army of books I am slowly massing. 😉

I can’t believe The Raven Cycle was in the children’s section! Does “childrens” assume Newborn to 18? Wow. I wonder if they were miss filed? Did you ask a librarian for help?

  • Jane @ Greenish Bookshelf June 20, 2017 at 3:27 pm

Love the Little House books! I just participated in a read along last year for those and reread the full series. It’s so darling 🙂

Lots of these are on my TBR too–the first two on your list are ones I have been excited about for a while! Also I haven’t read any Jules Verne either! I have 2 of his novels on my Classics Club list.

    • Jackie B July 8, 2017 at 6:49 pm

(Embarrassing confession: I responded to this comment, but I didn’t actually *respond*, I just replied to my own post. O_o Silly Jackie)

Oh man- do you do reads alongs all the time?! I am so jealous of your life. Did you read them *all*?! That’s quite a commitment!

Which novels are on your Classics Club list? WordPress is being a butt in Croatia, so I can’t check myself. How did you decide what to read?

      • Jane @ Greenish Bookshelf July 31, 2017 at 3:03 pm

Haha, no worries! Now I’m almost a month late in responding to you (newborn life!) and you’re totally back from Croatia and can probably see everything again. 🙂

I have only done a few read alongs 😉 But the Little House one was super fun. And I did a Harry Potter one just by myself last year which was great too–I’m always up for a reread of Harry!

Here’s my classics club list if you haven’t been able to see it: https://greenishbookshelf.com/the-classics-club-2/
Basically I picked 5 really long novels (War and Peace, Les Mis, etc) and tried to balance it out with some short children’s classics and even some rereads. I tried to do books I want to read and that I think I can actually read in the timeline. Making pretty good progress!

        • Jackie B August 2, 2017 at 11:41 am

I *can* see things again! It feels great to be back. I hope Newborn Life is just as amazing. It should be. 😉

A HP read-along would be a ton of fun. I’d probably get lost coordinating a ton of things for it over the course of the whole year. Brilliant.

I’m impressed with your list! I love the idea of The Classics Club. It might not be for me, if only because I am a bit scared/unimpressed with the classics overall. There are only a few of them I’ve read and loved. Most fall flat. I’m also the most nervous about reading poor translations. I’m a wuss.

          • Jane @ Greenish Bookshelf August 7, 2017 at 2:29 pm

            Thanks 🙂

And I can understand the classics being intimidating. They intimidate me too! But I am also a big classics nerd at heart so the Classics Club is just what I need to read more of them 🙂 I’m almost half way through Les Mis right now and I just love it. Super nerdy 🙂

  • KrystiYAandWine June 20, 2017 at 4:00 pm

I need to read some Robin Hobb books. I’ve heard such great things. The Graceling series is one of my all time favorites. 🙂

    • Jackie B July 8, 2017 at 6:48 pm

(Embarrassing confession: I responded to this comment, but I didn’t actually *respond*, I just replied to my own post. O_o Silly Jackie)

Yay! It makes me so happy to hear you love Graceling. It’s definitely something I should read sooner rather than later based on the replies I’ve seen here. It sounds like no one felt lukewarm about the series- all positive feedback thus far. That’s a huge recommendation, considering how strongly people feel about their books!

      • KrystiYAandWine July 8, 2017 at 11:00 pm

LOL. I’ve totally done that before. No worries. 🙂

Graceling is amazing. And it’s more amazing, because it was one of the first YA fantasy books written in this style. There’s been so many that have followed in its footsteps, but this was one of the first and still is one of the best! We do feel a little passionately about our books, don’t we. LOL.

        • Jackie B July 8, 2017 at 11:11 pm

We totally do. It’s at the top of my TBR now! Look at what you’ve done. I don’t know what I’d do without the recommendations of my bookish friends!!

          • KrystiYAandWine July 9, 2017 at 6:32 pm

It’s true! How bored would we be without all the book recommendations?! LOL.

  • Greg Hill June 20, 2017 at 6:04 pm

I need to try Sanderson and Mistborn shows up on a lot of lists. The Farseer trilogy was quite good. And the only Jules Verne I’ve read was 20,000 Leagues, which I should have LOVED given the subject matter, but I had to skim through parts. I guess I’m not big on the older style of writing, kind of embarrassed to admit. 🙂

I kinda wanted to red Graceling too. and those Little House books look so good all lined up like that!

    • Jackie B June 21, 2017 at 1:15 pm

I’m so glad that you enjoyed the Farseer Trilogy! I’ve heard from quite a few people through these comments that they love it, which has been reassuring that it’s a good choice. 😉

I think the older style of writing is why I haven’t really started those books yet. I am super interested in the topics, but I will probably skim them some, too. I don’t think that’s embarrassing– we just aren’t used to reading that style of writing. Did you still enjoy reading 20,000 Leagues?

  • Adoptabookaus June 20, 2017 at 6:58 pm

I just read Assassins Apprentice and really enjoyed it! Hobbs world building is truely amazing, hope you love it! Graceling is a fave of mine, the MC is extremely kickass and a feminist, the love interest is cocky and hilarious it’s just so much fun (and stabbing) XD

I have Mistborn and The Name of the Wind are top of my to buy lists I only just found out Mistborn was about a heist?! A MAGICAL HEIST I need it now. Gtreat list Jackie I hope you love all of these <3

    • Jackie B June 21, 2017 at 12:21 pm

Oh man. This comment excites me so much!! I trust your reviews and thoughts quite a bit, so it’s really exciting to hear that you enjoy these series.

I didn’t realize Mistborn was a magical heist!! Oh man. Now I want to read it even more. Ugh! why are there so many books to read and so little time? How can I make my job just reading books?!

      • Adoptabookaus June 21, 2017 at 6:03 pm

Awww thank you! <3 I hope you like it now, the pressure is on XD

RIGHT?! Magical heists are my jam no idea why everyone isn't shouting heist from the rooftops because I know I would have picked this up so much faster if I'd known sooner!

        • Jackie B June 29, 2017 at 2:40 pm

I bet the only reason people aren’t shouting about The Final Empire from the rooftops is that Sanderson has written and published about 1.5 million book since that one book came out- I imagine there are plenty of other things for Sanderson fans to shout from the rooftops.

  • iloveheartlandx June 21, 2017 at 12:30 pm

I love Rick Riordan’s books! I admire your patience in being able to wait until series are complete to read them, I just have no patience at all and want books as soon as I can get them!
    My TTT: https://jjbookblog.wordpress.com/2017/06/20/top-ten-tuesday-112/

    • Jackie B June 21, 2017 at 4:59 pm

Oh, I sometimes don’t have a lot of patience. That said, it’s pretty easy to leave them alone when my TBR is over 1,000 books! I definitely struggle to get to new books while then TBR is staring me in the face. 😉
Which of Riordan’s books have you read? Do you have a favorite?

  • Marie June 21, 2017 at 12:53 pm

Ohh, it makes me so happy to see To All The Boys on your TBR! I really love this series, it’s a cute and fluffy contemporary for sure, but it’s also so relatable. I could see my teenage years through the main character’s eyes, way of thinking, and just everything in her daily life feels real. Also love love love the family presence in this. I hope you’ll like it as much as I did 🙂

    • Jackie B June 29, 2017 at 2:38 pm

There is totally a time and place for cute and fluffy contemporary literature. And that time is now. I brought far to many challenging books on my vacation; I don’t know what I was thinking. I also adore positive family relationships– we don’t see enough of them in YA. I’m so excited to read this!

  • Shouni June 21, 2017 at 5:32 pm

YES THE GRACELING REALM! I love those books with all my heart and soul (the first two anyway, the third one is okay). I’ve been wanting to read The Kingkiller Chronicles too! I think I tried the first one but couldn’t get into it at the time so I’ll try again. Rick Riordan books are my childhood! The Hidden Oracle was great though I wasn’t a huge fan of the second one. The next series I want to start is probably The Falling Kingdoms series, I’ve been meaning to for a while now.

    • Jackie B June 29, 2017 at 2:35 pm

Now *that* is a strong recommendation!! It makes me wish I had downloaded Graceling before this trip, instead of book 1 for Mistborn. But, this just gives me something exciting to look forward to in the future. The whole premise to Graceling just fascinates me.

Ooooh. I’ve never heard of The Falling Kingdoms, but this is on my TBR now! I adore fantasy– particularly complex fantasy with magic. That’s why Mistborn in particular is on my TBR. I look forward to hearing what you think about them!

      • Shouni June 29, 2017 at 6:28 pm

I haven’t read Mistborn yet so that still may be a good choice. I hope you love Graceling! Fire is my favorite out of the trilogy but I love the first one too. I also adore magical Fantasy realms! I just love magic in general. I hope The Falling Kingdoms live up to expectations 😀 .

  • LizScanlon June 22, 2017 at 10:26 am

Ugh, I haven’t read any of these series… #fail! 😀 But Robin Hobb and Sanderson are on my list for sure… So… the question is, which series are you going to tackle first? 🙂

    • Jackie B June 29, 2017 at 2:32 pm

Haha- there is nothing wrong with that, Liis! I am going to start with Sanderson and Mistborn because I was able to borrow an e-Copy from a friend for my trip to Croatia. I doubt I’ll finish it, but at least I can start!!

      • LizScanlon June 30, 2017 at 3:04 pm

        Croatia!
Enjoy the trip- I bet it’s going to be fantastic!!!

        • Jackie B July 9, 2017 at 2:17 pm

It was awesome! I will be home properly soon, and for now I’m playing catch up. You guys were prolific in my absence.

  • Dani @ Perspective of a Writer June 22, 2017 at 12:58 pm

I’d say go for the Kingkiller Chronicle as you have someone who can remind you of all the little details!

Mistborn is a great series. I don’t know how you read every book in a series in one go because I have to take breaks, especially with a series like Mistborn… the first one was so looooooong, now it was equally a good but man to read the second one right away would take a better person than I am!

I’ve read a couple of the Farseer Trilogy a long time ago, they were quite good and my brother loves them still…

My mom and I loved the Edge Chronicles. They are standalone set in the same world so no details that you need to hold onto plus they are a like a palette cleanser between heavier books because they are so light and fun.

I want to read the Graceling series too!!!

Temeraire I’ve read the first two and want to get back to those… They are great with the history and of course dragons (which I love!) But I wasn’t enthralled with book two which is why it became impossible to start book 3…

I only have book 3 to read of to All The Boys I’ve Loved Before… I’ve really enjoyed this series, I thought Lara Jean was a really spot on high school girl and really it was all about who she is and not just her boy troubles.

Anyway sorry to hog the comment space but I recognized so MANY of the books on your list and wanted to share. Happy Reading!!

    • Jackie B June 29, 2017 at 2:31 pm

Haha- you are always welcome to make super long comments. Evelina and I do it all the time. It’s a perk to having overlapping book love.

I don’t really read all the books in a series straight through (well, sometimes I do, like with The Falconer), but I need to read them all in a short period of time. Any longer than a month between books and I feel like I forget critical details. It’s frustrating, particularly as someone who loves all those Easter egg type secrets and connections. I love to theorize, too! So, when I forget something critical it breaks much theories and I get frustrated.

I *adore* your mega comment if only because it 1) shows me we have overlapping book interests- yay! And 2) means that we will have lots to chat about! I’ve heard from friends that book 2 of Temeraire is a bit challenging, but it picks up again, if that helps. But I don’t know for sure. I just picked up To All the Boys in the airport, as I needed something fluffy. All my books for this trip suddenly felt challenging. I’m such a mood reader.

I love to theorize too and talk about author decisions so I get what you’re saying now… I can’t wait to hear what you think about Lara Jean’s last run!

        I wish I could be a mood reader… I have a ton of ARCs right now…

        • Jackie B July 9, 2017 at 2:16 pm

I should be an ARC reader! I have soooo many waiting for me. Ugh. I’m a terrible ARC reader.

  • theorangutanlibrarian June 22, 2017 at 7:15 pm

Ah yes I’m the same about needing to binge books too- there are some books I’m avoiding reading for that exact same reason- I need at least the second one out there. And man, I’ve needed to read Robin Hobb for years, it’s getting embarrassing… especially cos I have one of the books on my kindle and a ton of the others in my library… :/ And I want to read Temeraire too! And you’re right about Little House too. I do recommend giving Name of the Wind, Mistborn (even though I’ve not finished that series) and To all the boys a go!!! I really hope you enjoy them!

    • Jackie B June 29, 2017 at 2:25 pm

Thanks for all the confirmations on what to read next! I just downloaded To All the Boys (as we are delayed in the airport and for some reason the 8 billion books on my Kindle all sound lame… )

It always feels like we never have enough time to read all the books, right? Plus, when it’s time for a new book I often reach for what I’m in the mood for or what is in front of me. It makes starting an older series challenging!

      • theorangutanlibrarian July 1, 2017 at 9:10 pm

You’re welcome! Haha I’ve been there! Sometimes nothing on my kindle will do 😉
Ahhh I’m the exact same!!! I’m also always downloading books to hoard for a rainy day!!

I 100% recommend Mistborn. I read it last year and really, REALLY loved it. Huge fantasy fan here and I just thought Brandon Sanderson’s the best at world-building compared to everyone else – he’s just so inventive and his magic system is completely, completely unique and mesmerising to me. I got sucked into the Mistborn world so bad that even months after finishing I’m still in awe of how he managed to pull everything off. Highly recommended. 😛

I’ve also read To All The Boys and would recommend that too, though it’s nowhere close to Mistborn in my opinion. It IS fluffy, though, and really cute and sweet and light-hearted so I think it has its place.

Hope you enjoy all these books! <3

    • Jackie B July 8, 2017 at 8:19 pm

Thanks, Reg! I just started Mistborn because EVERYONE has been telling me to read it since this post. I’ve read a few Sanderson works and he always captivates me. His magic systems are always really compelling.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

I’m so glad to hear that! How are you finding it so far? I think it took me a while to get into but I really, really loved his world and it was SO hard to leave it at the end of the trilogy.

        • Jackie B July 13, 2017 at 9:55 am

It’s a slow start for me, too, but I think that’s mostly because it was too dense for a vacation read. I’m taking it slowly for now. I love Sanderson’s writing, but it requires a lot more focus than holiday would allow. XD

          • Reg @ She Latitude July 13, 2017 at 11:22 pm

I completely get it! I hope you enjoy the rest of the book. <3

  • Amanda @Cover2CoverMom June 24, 2017 at 5:13 pm

I read Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne last year and was surprised at how much I loved it! There are some geological descriptions that weren’t exactly riveting, but overall a really good read!

I’ve actually never read the Percy Jackson series, so those are on my list. I’m sure after I read those, I’ll move on to Trials of Apollo.

I’ve been wanting to give a Robin Hobb book a go for a long time and the Farseer Trilogy is most often recommended to me as a good place to start.

    • Jackie B June 29, 2017 at 2:24 pm

Yay! I’m glad Verne withstood the test of time for you. I’ll have to just get over my fear and take the plunge soon, then.

I think you’d really enjoy the second Percy Jackson series, The Heroes of Olympus. The first series is still good, and quite addicting pop-fiction, but the second series really makes the characters come alive. It’s obvious that Riordan is writing for a different age group, too.

  • Evelina @ AvalinahsBooks June 25, 2017 at 2:52 pm

Oh yes, I should absolutely start on the Little House. And we started Assassin’s Apprentice with boyfriend a while ago, but reading aloud together is just… not that easy to arrange a lot of times xD plus, that book is like… super depressing. Like, SUPER depressing, gah! But it’s good, solid fantasy, so I think you should give it a go.

    • Jackie B June 29, 2017 at 2:21 pm

Reading aloud together is *always* a challenge. My other half and I started reading Harry Potter together (because I adore it) as a bedtime ritual. But, I go to bed before my other half most often. that quickly fizzled out. We do a lot of driving home to visit our parents (~8 hours in the car, no matter which set we are visiting), so audiobooks are our thing now.
Is it particularly graphic? Sad I can handle, but graphic… not so much.

      • Evelina @ AvalinahsBooks June 29, 2017 at 2:22 pm

I can’t say graphic. Just sad :/ bad stuff keeps happening and the killing off of characters is pretty bad xD
Oh dear, Harry Potter is very long, so that’s not the best of choices to read as an experiment like that

  • Jackie B June 29, 2017 at 2:42 pm

Yay! It makes me so happy to hear you love Graceling. It’s definitely something I should read sooner rather than later based on the replies I’ve seen here. It sounds like no one felt lukewarm about the series- all positive feedback thus far. That’s a huge recommendation, considering how strongly people feel about their books!

  • Jackie B June 29, 2017 at 2:44 pm

Oh man- do you do reads alongs all the time?! I am so jealous of your life. Did you read them *all*?! That’s quite a commitment!

Which novels are on your Classics Club list? WordPress is being a butt in Croatia, so I can’t check myself. How did you decide what to read?

  • Chiara @ Books for a Delicate Eternity July 3, 2017 at 10:33 pm

I haven’t read any of these series, either, so i cannot push you to read any of them, haha. I really do want to read the Graceling books! I have hard a lot of good things, and I am 99% sure I own the first book, too.

There are so many series that I want to start, but since I am currently reading about 60 I want to finish off some of them before I start any more!

  • Zezee August 13, 2017 at 12:19 pm

Oh yea! Def need to pick up those Farseer books. They’re great!
And I have the Kingkiller and Mistborn books on my TBR too.

    • Jackie B August 13, 2017 at 5:10 pm

It’s awesome that our TBRs align so much! What series have you recently read which you’ve enjoyed Zezee? I feel like I should add another one or two to my list… O_o

Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

      • Zezee August 13, 2017 at 8:08 pm

        No prob.
I started reading the Farseer books last year and loved them and recently complete the Liveship Traders trilogy, which was good too. Hobb is def a great author to start reading.
More recently I read Brent Weeks’s Way of Shadows and loved it. I’m hooked.

        • Jackie B August 15, 2017 at 11:42 am

I haven’t heard of Brent Weeks; I’ll have to look up his works. Thanks for the additional recommendation! Nothing like a brilliant new fantasy world. 😀
