#ThanksgivingReadathon Announcement

November 13, 2017

It was only last year when I really started putting myself out there in the blogosphere. When I started blogging, I was talking into the void and it satisfied me. I was a bit nervous that no one would want to talk to me, honestly. Am I thankful that I decided to put myself out there! One of the first bookish friends I made through blogging is Ottavia @ Novels and Nonfiction. She writes intelligent posts and is a considerate and thoughtful member of the community. I was so happy when we connected! Finally, I realized that there was a place for me in this crazy world of blogging. There were people like me.

Last year, Ottavia and I were chatting and realized we both needed an excuse to sit back and read the week of Thanksgiving. Me? I needed to escape from the family a bit. Her? Well, I won’t put words in her mouth. We agreed to read and tweet and prioritize reading time for ourselves. It was a great, low-key experience. We both enjoyed it and knew we wanted to share the love with the world next year: And thus, the Thanksgiving Readathon was born!

It’s hard to believe we’re only one week away from my favorite holiday of the year*! That means it’s time to get hyped up for the most low-key readathon of the year! The Thanksgiving Readathon is a stress-free way to get caught up with your reading and prioritize me-time during a family-packed week. After all, we’re getting dangerously close to the end of those year-long reading goals, right?

How It Works

I don’t know if I’d have time to participate in this readathon, but I do love the idea! I’m glad that you’re making it happen for those who’ll be reading during those days! Unfortunately, as a fellow Canadian, that giveaway will be a no-go as well, but that’s all right! 😛 Happy for all those who get the chance to win and read it! 😀

    • Jackie B November 16, 2017 at 2:21 pm

Thanks, Lashaan! It’s just a way to prioritize reading and self-care during a traditionally busy time in America.

Ottavia and I spoke; we’re going to expand the giveaway to Canada. You shall not be omitted due to imaginary lines!

Love this post! I’m definitely stealing some of your super cute wording to spruce up mine for Wednesday 😉 lol

    • Jackie B November 16, 2017 at 9:38 am

Yay!! I couldn’t be more excited to share in this with you.

  • Hungry Bookworm November 14, 2017 at 7:55 am

This is a wonderful idea! I will definitely be participating 🙂

    • Jackie B November 15, 2017 at 10:57 am

YAY! I’m so excited to hear that, Megan! We are super excited to have you. I look forward to seeing what you’ll be reading and getting to know you better throughout the readathon. Welcome to the team!

  • Annemieke November 14, 2017 at 8:39 am

I don’t think I’ll particiate as my husband is free and it is harder for me to read when he is home, haha. But I am a great cheerleader. 😉

    • Jackie B November 16, 2017 at 9:39 am

Cheering is great! I’ll take that over silence any day. It must be super exciting that your husband will be home though. 😀 I’m sure both you and Merijn will love it.

Great idea. Good for you (and Ottavia) for leading this. The weekend after Thanksgiving is usually super busy for me – that’s when we decorate the house for Christmas plus I have to work that Saturday (BOOOOO!) so I’ll be lucky to read a little bit at night before I got to sleep. But good luck and happy reading!

    • Jackie B November 16, 2017 at 9:41 am

Ugh, you have to work the Saturday after Thanksgiving?! That’s unfortunate. I love spending the weekend after Thanksgiving getting everything all decorated, too! It’s nice to spend so much time with the family.

I hope that you at least get a little bit of reading time in around Thanksgiving!

I’m not sure I’ll be able to participate because I have a lot of traveling to do!

    • Jackie B November 16, 2017 at 9:40 am

Tell me about it. We have a 9 hour car ride to and from my parent’s house. Luckily, David and I both enjoy similar genres of audiobooks, so we listen to them when we drive. It’s nice to have someone around to discuss the books with me!

      • Grab the Lapels November 16, 2017 at 2:52 pm

Oh, that is cool! I’m not good at focusing on a book and driving at the same time *gulp*

        • Jackie B November 17, 2017 at 3:53 pm

I’m more dangerous on the road when I have an opportunity to let my mind wander! I find listening to words like this really focuses me somehow.

I just picked up a copy of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell from the library for the trip. I had no idea it would be 26 discs long… O_o Almost 40 hours in length. Yeah, not this trip, I guess.

          • Grab the Lapels November 17, 2017 at 6:05 pm

I’m not sure what that is, but I would pick something you can finish in the one trip for sure! And then a different one for the trip back, of course. Maybe a YA novel? Those tend to be pretty speedy. Another blogger said she just listened to Northanger Abbey as an audio drama from Audible, and it was great!

            • Jackie B November 19, 2017 at 11:14 am

It’s a fantasy novel– I was looking for something standalone, I just didn’t to check on the length for Jonathan Strange — 1008 pages. Righto.

I love listening to full-cast dramas. It took me a while to get into them when I started, but now that my brain understands how to process them more, I really enjoy them. I’ll have to look into this one for Northanger Abbey.

              • Grab the Lapels November 19, 2017 at 4:44 pm

I looked into Northanger Abbey, and it’s $22 on Audible. I don’t get Audible. A membership is $15 per month and you get one book. It’s like, “Oh, so I can buy a book a month? Yay for me…?” I suppose you do save money if the regular price is $22, though. My library has a lot of digital downloads of audio books. You don’t even need a CD player, though they have CD audio books, too.

                • Jackie B November 21, 2017 at 7:39 pm

I am all about the audiobooks from the library. I get both CDs and digital downloads on the regular. Sadly, our library doesn’t have the audio drama, but I have some friends who use Audible… perhaps I can convince them?

I also don’t get Audible. The thing with audiobooks is that I have yet to listen to an audiobook twice. Do people do that? If I re-read them, it would be different, I think…

                  • Grab the Lapels November 22, 2017 at 9:40 am

I don’t read a ton of books twice, but i keep certain ones that I think I may use in the classroom in the future.

  • Lost In A Good Book November 15, 2017 at 3:59 pm

That sounds like a great idea! I’m not sure how much i will be able to accomplish but I will have fun trying!

    • Jackie B November 17, 2017 at 3:59 pm

Yay! We are super excited you’re willing to try. After all, this is really about just making time for ourselves during the holiday. That’s so important.

  • Jane @ Greenish Bookshelf November 15, 2017 at 8:57 pm

Okay. This is amazing!! I am totally in! Now how to keep my TBR goals attainable for that week? 🙂

  • Dani @ Perspective of a Writer November 16, 2017 at 2:30 am

YES Jackie!! <3 I will be participating but as I'm in a reading slump I may not read many books *cries* I am super pumped for the giveaway!! I'm curious about the book and the MUG!! IT is super cute!! Ottavia did an EXCELLENT job putting it together…

    • Jackie B November 19, 2017 at 10:15 am

YAY! We’re super glad to have you!!! Don’t worry about not reading many books. This is about just getting through the Thanksgiving weekend and prioritizing self-time in there. I know I struggle with this regularly, let alone when all my family is around!

Didn’t Ottavia do a great job?! I’m so impressed.
