Shout Out and Shameless Plug

November 14, 2016

Guys! Guys! I wrote my first guest blog post! Now, I understand the idea behind a guest blog post is that it sits on another blog and people flock there to read it and chat about it… but I feel so honored that Brendon @ Reading and Gaming for Justice was willing to collaborate with me.

Brendon’s blog thesis is more or less stems from the fact that he has some questions and concerns about the social justice implications of the literature and board game markets. His blog is to get more involved in these communities and be a part of the social justice journey. Pretty rad, to say the least.

November is Indigenous People’s Heritage Month in the United States, so Brendon is featuring posts and reviews of #OwnVoices Native Hawai’ian authors. This immediately piqued my interest, and I reached out to be a part of this. Being involved in dialogues with other bloggers has been key to my development and sharing my own message. Brendon’s goal and mine are the same: to subvert the dominant narrative and life the voices of marginalized peoples.

I strongly encourage you to check out Brendon’s blog, and all his Native Hawai’ian #OwnVoices posts.

(Also, isn’t this image Brendon put together just the sweetest? I’ve got to improve my photos game… He rules at it.)

All of the posts are great. I was particularly intrigued by his #ProtectMaunaKea post. Decolonizing science? Woah.

Okay. End of the shameless plug. I’m just so proud to be welcomed as a part of a community which embraces ideas like this. Thank you for the opportunity, Brendon. I couldn’t be happier to be a part of this.

I just finished reading your post, Jackie. It’s fantastic! I appreciate the effort and time you put into the research and writing. It really shows you care.
I have not read any books by Indigenous Hawaiians yet, but I will make an honest effort to read more next year. Thanks for bringing this to people’s attention!

Thanks, Naz! This means a lot to me coming from you– I respect how well-researched your posts are as well. Let me know if you find any great new books by native Hawai’ian authors! I’ll be stalking your blog of course, too. 🙂

I really enjoyed reading your post, Jackie. I have never thought about reading an indigenous Hawaiian author before, despite making an earnest effort to read authors of color over the past two years. I’ll be looking for authors now!

Thanks Laila! I’m so glad you’ve made an effort to read the works of authors of color recently. Any books in particular stand out as gems? Feel free to link to your own reviews in response! I am always looking for more books. That said, if you find any indigenous Hawai’ian authors you want to share– let me know! I’m obviously looking. 😉
