A Very ARCish Readathon
Read-a-thon / April 5, 2017

The amazing Aimal @ Bookshelves and Paperbacks has come up with a wonderful April challenge! As a kick off to my own personal Spring Cleaning efforts, I will be participating in her A Very ARC-ish Readathon! (Complete with super-sweet banner above. I am so impressed!) This is a low-pressure readathon during the month of April with the sole goal of getting through the ARC backlog. And what book blogger doesn’t have an ARC backlog?! My ARC backlog is daunting and overwhelming.  I have a pathetic 41% feedback ratio on NetGalley right now. Actually, in reviewing my NetGalley archives I’ve noticed that some are books I’ve read, but never posted the review for, and others are already published now! O_o (I honestly drank too much wine one night and went on a requesting RAMPAGE – I have minor regrets. The wine was delicious. The backlog is not.) In honor of this glaring stupidity, here are my goals: Read as many ARCs as I can (TBR below) Post reviews on NetGalley for all ARCs read this month, as well as the ones I’ve already read Publish at least one ARC review on my blog and link back to NetGalley Read my outstanding…

Bout of Books 18 Wrap Up
Read-a-thon / January 9, 2017

Bout of Books was my first real social-heavy readathon. I’ve participated in readathons with friends in small groups, in person, and over the internet. But I’ve never participated in a readathon so public, so popular and so… involved. This was definitely a learning process for me. Lessons Learned Posting daily is not for me. I am a very busy person who is bad at saying no. Blogging and social media are a hobby of mine. When I set a rigorous schedule for myself, this stops being a hobby and becomes a chore. Reading was still fun, but I avoided my blog a few days to try and not give up entirely on blogging and social media forever. Barely anyone actually does separate daily blog posts. Seriously! I had no idea. On Day 2 I realized most people were updating the same blog post each day. That’s a HUGE lesson learned. Due to added stress, I didn’t really network or make new friends. This was one major reason I was interested in this readathon. Instead, I avoided all blogs and social media in general. They were a source of added stress since I had something I HAD to do daily. I forced myself…

Bout of Books 18 Recaps Days 4-6
Read-a-thon / January 8, 2017

Well. That didn’t go completely as planned, but when does life every follow the straight and narrow?  Let’s get the bad confessions out of the way: I obviously missed some things through social media and blogging the past few days. This is why I don’t post daily, people! I’ve learned that in the future, I should give myself some more flexibility with my social interactions in readathons. Twitter only? Sure. I can do that in the future. Something like that. The good is that while I haven’t been updating the last few days, I did get a ton of reading in! Let’s check in: January 5th through 7th – Days 4-6 Review Books Read: Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou, Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor, Dark Matter by Blake Crouch, The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman Completed Books: Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou, Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor Goal Updates (6/10): I will read for at least 60 minutes each day, including at least 4 straight hours on at least one day. 4 hours straight were accomplished on Day 1! Thanks, bank holidays! I also think I will get 4 more hours in tomorrow. Absolute insanity. I…

Bout of Books 18 Recap Day 3: Book to Movie
Read-a-thon / January 5, 2017

Poor Day Three. I barely got to read anything! Bout of Books – I need you to keep me on my game! And while it was a shame, I can’t wait until Friday night when things lighten up a bit. I’ve been so busy the past few days! Friday through Sunday will be nice and filled with reading, however. 🙂 January 4th – Day 3 Review Books Read: Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou, Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor Completed Book: N/A Goal Updates (2/10): I will read for at least 60 minutes each day, including at least 4 straight hours on at least one day. 4 hours straight were accomplished on Day 1! Thanks, bank holidays! I will finish a book which I am currently reading. Gilded Cage was not intended for this goal, but I did start it before the readathon and finish it on day 1! I’m still hoping that I can get through a book for work… This is looking like a Weekend activity. I will read one book from start to finish. Akata Witch will be it! I just… need to read more. I will participate actively on Twitter and on my blog. Nailed it….

Bout of Books 18 Recap Day 2: 2017 in a Picture
Read-a-thon / January 4, 2017

Day two was a less eventful day, but that’s because I went to work. Le sigh. That’s okay! I managed to make some good progress on Bout of Books. It’s time for my daily update! January 3rd – Day 2 Review Books Read: Jazz Day: The Making of a Famous Photograph by Roxane Orgill, illustrated by Francis Vallejo, Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou, Akata Witch by  Nnedi Okorafor Completed Book: Jazz Day: The Making of a Famous Photograph by Roxane Orgill, illustrated by Francis Vallejo Goal Updates (2/10): I will read for at least 60 minutes each day, including at least 4 straight hours on at least one day. 4 hours straight were accomplished on Day 1! And we are off! I have wrapped up the first day of Bout of Books 18. A brand new year and a brand new Jackie B.– I thought it was a good idea to start off the year by pushing myself a bit. Bout of Books: Let’s start the year off right!
Read-a-thon / December 25, 2016

It’s time for the next Bout of Books– #18, to be precise! I’ve been in a bit of a slump lately. And it’s been hard. As 2016 has wrapped up, I’ve found myself lagging on many of my yearly challenges. Part of the reason I’m lagging is that I’ve overcommitted. The other part is that I’ve left all the books I wasn’t really interested in reading in the first place until the end. Silly Jackie. Why would you do that to yourself? I have many plans to help alleviate this for 2017. I’ve been coming up with grand plans and resolutions for the upcoming year. We all know 2017 can only improve upon the year we’ve just had. That said, I know I need to start my book journey on the right foot. So, I’ve decided to commit to Bout of Books 18!  From their website: The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01 am Monday, January 2nd and runs through Sunday, January 8th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. #ThanksgivingReadathon
Read-a-thon / November 22, 2016

I don’t know about you guys, but the week of Thanksgiving is my favorite week of the year. This is the week my family celebrates all our holidays and comes together. It’s intense: tons of people, food, drink, and activities. We go non-stop despite finally having some days off to relax. But, sometimes, I just want to escape. It can get pretty overwhelming! In the past, I’ve taken some time for myself to do some work (boooo), but this year, I’m changing it up. Instead of escaping to work, I’m going to escape and read. I know we’re all shocked. And to provide motivation, Ottavia at Novels and Nonfiction and I are hosting a #ThanksgivingReadathon!      I still have a long way to go on my 2016 reading challenges, and even further to go with my TBR. Here are my goals for this week: Complete at least one of my five outstanding yearly review challenges.  Listen to at least two audiobooks. Read a Newbery Award Winner Read two ARCs Read at least one non-fiction book Complete a book I have been reading for more than one month (FIVE outstanding yearly reading challenges?! Fool of a Jackie… O_o) I will totally give myself a…
