Bout of Books 18 Recap Day 1: Introduce Yourself

January 3, 2017

And we are off! I have wrapped up the first day of Bout of Books 18. A brand new year and a brand new Jackie B.– I thought it was a good idea to start off the year by pushing myself a bit. I feel like things fell off for me at the end of the year and I want to get back on track. I’m hoping this readathon will give me the strong start I need to be successful throughout the year.

For those of you unfamiliar with Bout of Books, here is the blurb from their website:

bout-of-books-18The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 2nd and runs through Sunday, January 8th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 18 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

I will be providing a daily update throughout the Readathon to keep me honest and make more connections with my fellow #boutofbook-ers.

You’re a Hufflepuff as well! At first I had a hard time coping with this house, but now I’m seeing some pretty awesome people are in it

I thought I was doing well with this challenge, but it seems you’re killing it xD I missed the Twitter chat as well, because the time converter showed me it would be in the middle of my night or morning 😛 so maybe… nope.

Actually, due to the time thing I am not sure whether it’s day one or day two now timezone bogus. But I guess it’s not that important, I’m not there to win, I’m there just to reach my own goals 🙂

    • Jackie B January 3, 2017 at 4:58 pm

Pft, I adore Hufflepuff. It completely embodies me: hard work, dedication, patience, loyalty, and fair play? Yup! We’re the coolest house. We might not be saving the world, but we are having all the fun with all the people.

Don’t worry about the time zone stuff. It doesn’t matter what “day” it is, as long as you cross post (if you want prizes). Luckily everything is in my time zone, AND I had yesterday off, so I just read for 4 hours on Day 1. The rest of the challenge I’m at work, so it will be downhill from here as far as progress is concerned. 🙂 Oops!

Haha, yeah, that’s me in 5 words, basically. I was feeling weird at being a Hufflepuff at first, cause that house just gets so bullied 🙁
What’s cross posting xD the thing where you put your link on the linky on their site? Geez, I’m so green at this.
Meanwhile I’m catching up on my review. Two good ones coming up, this one I’m gonna do right now will have school photos of mine 😀 nostalgic to even write it. Strange what blogging can do to you, haha.

The interesting thing about Hufflepuff is that they are bullied IRL, but I don’t feel like they are bullied in the books. It’s a weird thing, that. We are the best house! Near the kitchens, we love food and friends. Social time?! Yes please!

Yeah, I’m talking about adding the link to the linky. It’s not *really* cross-posting, but I haven’t found a single definition. I interpret it as a way for other people to find your details on another blog.

Oooo– I’m excited to read your new reviews! Keep up the great work– and good luck with your Bout! 🙂

Ha, love your six word intro. “Must read” is perfection.
I’m so impressed that you already read three books! I read “Mom & Me & Mom” a while back and really enjoyed it!

    • Jackie B January 4, 2017 at 12:17 pm

Thanks, Sally! I appreciate you stopping by and commenting. 🙂
I am about halfway through Mom & Me & Mom and I am absolutely shocked and horrified what Maya Angelou has gone through. This is the first of her memoirs I have read– it’s making me want to read even more of her works.

  • Kourtni @ Kourtni Reads January 3, 2017 at 7:32 pm

Looks like you’re doing pretty well so far! I finished my first book this afternoon (although I cheated and started it the day before the readathon actually started, haha). I made it to part of the Twitter chat last night, but I was not in a very sociable mood so I didn’t stay for the whole thing 😛

    • Jackie B January 4, 2017 at 11:38 pm

Thanks, Kourtni! It really appreciate it.
And cheating is totally acceptable. I did the same thing. O_o But I wasn’t going to stop reading just because it was time for a readathon! Totally counts. And at least you made it to the Twitter chat for a bit. 🙂

      • Kourtni @ Kourtni Reads January 5, 2017 at 9:26 am

Originally I was going to wait to start a new book until the readathon started, but I wanted to read so I abandoned that plan, haha.

        • Jackie B January 9, 2017 at 9:17 am

I function very similarly. I have all these great plans, but I am more of a mood reader, so they always get thrown by the wayside. Oops! I hope you enjoyed your books this Bout. 🙂

          • Kourtni @ Kourtni Reads January 9, 2017 at 9:53 am

Sometimes I’m great at sticking to plans and other times… not so much, haha. Thanks! I hope you enjoyed yours as well 🙂

  • Resh Susan @ The Book Satchel January 3, 2017 at 9:48 pm

Glad you are on the right track. I will look forward to your review on Akata Witch

    • Jackie B January 4, 2017 at 11:39 pm

Thanks, Resh Susan! I look forward to finishing it– it’s been a great book.

  • Read Diverse Books January 6, 2017 at 6:14 pm

This always looked like a fun challenge! Maybe I’ll do the next one, but I always seem to miss the announcements.
I too look forward to your review of Akata Witch. Have always wanted to read it. 🙂
    Keep reading and having fun!

    • Jackie B January 9, 2017 at 9:20 am

It was a nice challenge, but now that it’s over, I don’t know if it was for me. We shall see when the next one comes around. It’s easy to miss the announcements, also. I would have missed it if not for someone pointing it out– I feel like while Bout is really popular, people don’t do a great job publicizing.

I really enjoyed Akata Witch– it wasn’t perfect, but it was a great introduction to juju and West African culture to me. I loved Nnedi’s writing, as well. Full review, obviously, to come soon. 🙂
