#AnneReadAlong2017: 5 Adventures Present-Day Anne Would Have Gotten Up To

June 30, 2017

After reading Anne of Green Gables, it’s obvious that Anne gets up to all sorts of antics. Some of them are just silly things manifested from her imagination, but others are just zany circumstance. Therefore,  Jane @ Greenish Bookshelf and I thought that it would be fun to come up with new adventures for a modern day Anne Shirley.

Feel free to join in our Top 5 List posts and link-up below. Our schedule is merely recommended– you’re welcome to join in whatever you’d like whenever you’d like! And without further ado…

Top 5 Adventures Present-Day Anne Would Have Gotten Up To

1 – Leads a Local Chapter of Our Shared Shelf

Emma Watson’s Goodreads book club, Our Shared Shelf, is fantastic. I can 100% see Anne Shirley deciding that the students of Avonlea School (while student or teacher) or those of Redmond College needing to be more open in understanding The Other in their midst- whether they be women, Muslim, disabled, etc etc etc. She gets so excited and puts posters all over the school inviting people. However, once a diverse group of readers show up and begin to argue with each other about what is “correct” in their eyes (therefore, everyone else is wrong because of the polarization of social politics- particularly around the specifics of feminism), Anne loses control of the discussion. Chaos ensues, feelings are hurt, and Anne vows to only have these discussions in small groups of her bosom friends.

2 – Attempt her own Cooking Vlog

Yes, you heard me right. Cooking Vlog. Can you just imagine? Young Anne, as she learns to cook, also discovers YouTube blogs. Immediately she believes that working together with Diana they can become internet famous with a cooking blog. Obviously, Diana isn’t so sure. They pool their allowances and pick up a tripod for their smart phones, nicer microphones, and some video editing software. They carefully plan out 4 “episodes” mostly by means of daydreaming and deciding how they can make their blog more romantic. After getting dressed in their Sunday finest, the ladies clear Marilla out of the kitchen and prepare everything. Of course, as soon as they press record, everything goes wrong. They read the recipe wrong, measure things incorrectly, don’t have all the ingredients, ask Marilla for substitutions (which they also mess up) and make a gigantic mess. When all is said and done, their cake looks and tastes beautiful but they are ragged messes. Once the camera is off, Diana suggests that perhaps they weren’t cut out for internet fame. Anne agrees as far as video is concerned… it’s just not romantic enough for them. But what about a traditional blog? 😉

3 – Accidentally goes to Yoga in a pair of see-through Lululemon leggings.

Here is how I imagine this goes down. Diana wants to get into yoga because it’s trendy, she wants to get in on it, and she is subtly encouraging her friends to workout. Obviously, they have never done yoga before, so Jane encourages them all to purchase lululemon yoga pants. They are trendy, made from sustainable materials, have a manifesto she knows Anne will believe in. Besides, she just opened her own Lululemon store on Facebook last weekend! The girls, who happen to include Diana, Jane, Anne, and Charlotta the Fourth (because why not?) head off to a local yoga studio, excited for this new experience. Upon arriving, Diana encourages them to hang out in the back as she is feeling self conscious- she just can’t imagine doing yoga in front of all these skinny experts! This means Diana and Charlotta are the only people behind Anne. About halfway through, Diana notices how transparent Anne’s yoga pants are, but is too mortified to say anything. Instead, right before meditation and the ending, Charlotta notices and PANICKS. She completely disrupts the whole class for a moment, unable to get out real words. Finally, during meditation, Charlotta tells Ms Anne the horrid truth. The girls stay until the end and shuffle out in a pod together. They all agree in the parking lot that this was a wonderful growing experience and they will never go to a yoga class again.

4 – Gets addicted to a cell phone game.

Okay, okay- this sounds silly. But imagine: Mr. Harrison, now that he had a wonderful wife around to help him make a home, spends time on his porch smoking cigars and playing games on his phone. When Anne stops by for tea he introduces her to Candy Crush. At first, it’s just a friendly game- she helps him beat a hard level, and then downloads it to her phone. Suddenly, Anne is up all night playing. She loses sleep, stops eating as much, ignores Diana, loses academic competitions, and even stops daydreaming. After a week, Diana and Gilbert stage an intervention with AVIS. They steal her phone, uninstall Candy Crush, and confront her. Anne has a realization that she has been ignoring all her friends and swears off all cell phone games forever in a dramatic monologue. Diana swoons over her friend’s ability to quickly repent. Gilbert swoons over her articulate reply.

5 – Writes a full novel on Wattpad

Okay, this one might not end as a misadventure, but I can totally see Anne Shirley deciding she has come up with the next great Canadian novel and she MUST write it in such a way the WHOLE WORLD can see. She obviously chooses Wattpad because her vlog didn’t go well, and therefore all blogs and variations thereof have been sworn off FOREVER. Instead, with Wattpad she can share chapters as she writes them. She comes up with a ridiculous pen name (because pen names are more romantic and she can imagine herself as a fiar raven haired queen this way).

This list was surprisingly challenging for me to come up with! I’m a bit shocked, since Anne has so many misadventures, I thought it might be easier. Oops! I think I’m just not creative enough, honestly. This is why I blog and I don’t write stories. I’ll leave that to my author friends.

Oh my god 😀 THIS WAS HILARIOUS!!! I laughed out loud, literally 😀 it’s especially funny because that’s pretty much how I got REALLY BADLY jato candy crush last year. I only stopped playing it because I couldn’t pass level 379 or something (yes, it was definitely close to 400.) For a time, it was the only thing that managed to put me to sleep, I just had such a Pavlovian response 😀

Anyway. These were hilarious and very likely 😀 especially the yoga pants one! Oh my god.

This was too cute, lol! I actually could totally imagine each and every one of these… I haven’t read the books for a really long time but really Anne and her friends are not that much different from girls nowadays, lol… I actually didn’t know those leggings had a special name for them but how embarrassing! Such a fun post… made me reminisce about watching the tv series growing up!

This is such a fun and creative post! I can totally see the cooking vlog! I hope this is prescheduled and you aren’t worrying about blogging during your epic adventure!

I can imagine Anne vlogging and using Wattpad. So adorable. Great idea for a post

This is one of the best Anne Shirley-related posts I’ve ever read! I love your idea about the cooking vlog! I think instead of getting addicted to cell phone games, Anne would have a TERRIBLE time with accidentally texting the wrong person. She would text something mean about Gilbert to Diana, but accidentally send it to Gilbert. Or maybe she would screen shot Gilbert’s playful texts to her and share them on Twitter so the whole world could shame him! Love it, J!

Ahhhhhh this was so cute Jackie!!!! I can totally see Anne running her own book club & attempting a cooking vlog! I could also see Anne having her own book/writing blog 🙂 We would totally be book blogging buddies lol I am sad I didn’t attempt this topic now! Maybe I’ll give it a go after vacation.

I’d love to hear your own ideas. It was a challenge– but it was a lot of fun to come up with my own Anne vignettes. 🙂 Anne has so much passion for things that it’s easy to get her wrapped up in some crazy events.

ooh what a fantastic topic!! hahaha I love the idea of her running a cooking vlog- what a brilliant idea! And very on point- I’m pretty sure it would go down exactly like that! hehehehe and the idea of her being addicted to candy crush makes me giggle. And the yoga and Wattpad thing- LOL!

    • Jackie B July 27, 2017 at 9:08 am

These were challenging to write, but I’m really happy with how they turned out. It looks like sometimes we just need to push ourselves a bit. 😀

      • theorangutanlibrarian July 29, 2017 at 7:35 am

Hehe yes I can imagine!! But it worked brilliantly!!

        • Krysta August 26, 2017 at 9:32 pm

I was going to say she would have a disastrous cooking blog!! Or maybe a board of Pinterest fails!

          • theorangutanlibrarian August 27, 2017 at 5:19 pm

            hehehehe

          • Jackie B August 27, 2017 at 10:58 pm

Ooooh– Pinterest or Etsy fails! Can you imagine Anne and Diana opening an Etsy shop? XD I’m dying.

Haha, this is totally Anne. I can see her doing all of these. 😀

    • Jackie B October 13, 2017 at 10:09 am

Thank you! I’m glad that you would agree. Are you familiar with the whole series, or just Anne of Green Gables as the content of the first book?

Thank you for stopping by and commenting, Violet!

I’m currently reading the third book, but I’ve seen all the movies. Which I now is bad, but the movies are just too charming. 😀

        • Jackie B October 15, 2017 at 3:32 pm

Haha. Well, it’s a good thing the books get better. 😉 I haven’t seen the movies yet. I will definitely be watching them after I read all the books, though.
