#AnneReadAlong2017 : 5 Adventures I Would Join in with Anne Shirley

August 25, 2017

After reading Anne of Green Gables, it’s obvious that Anne gets up to all sorts of antics. Some of them are just silly things manifested from her imagination and others are just zany circumstance. Regardless, they all make for wonderful stories. Wouldn’t it be magical to join Anne Shirley on one of these adventures? How about five?! Therefore,  Jane @ Greenish Bookshelf and I thought that it would be fun to identify which adventures we’d love to join Anne Shirley on. After all, she could use a new friend in us, right?

Feel free to join in our Top 5 List posts and link up below. Our schedule is merely recommended– you’re welcome to join in whatever you’d like whenever you’d like!

Also- We have a giveaway to celebrate the halfway point in our #AnneReadAlong2017 adventure! Can you believe it? We’re already halfway done reading all these wonderful books. Check out my post from yesterday for details and how to enter. It’s open internationally, my friends. Spread the word!

And without further ado…

Top 5 Adventures I Would Join in with Anne Shirley

1 – Anne of Green Gables, Chapter 16: Diana is Invited to Tea with Tragic Results

Now *this* is the tea party I want to attend! Marilla and Matthew are out for the day, so Marilla says that Diana can join Anne for tea. Anne is so excited! She does lots of preparation. Both girls don their best dresses. Marilla said Anne could even use the raspberry cordial. Unfortunately, here begins a series of laughable events when Marsilla’s inability to label things correctly gets Anne in trouble. Turns out that the “raspberry cordial” is actually currant wine! Thus Diana Barry gets completely schnockered. What an amazing first tea party!

2 – Anne of Green Gables, Chapter 19: A Concert and a Confession

Ahh, the moment when Anne Shirley meets Josephine Barry. Marilla finally allows Anne to go into town with her friends and view a concert. It’s all very exciting! Diana and Anne are even to stay in a guest room for the first time!! As excited as they are, these young girls decide they will rush the room and jump straight on to the bed when they get home late. Alas! It turns out Miss Josephine Barry arrived last minute and is now in the bed! And so begins a remarkable friendship. What an adventure!

3 – Anne of Avonlea, Chapter 18: An Adventures on the Tory Road

I couldn’t *not* list this adventure! When Diana learns that the Copps in the next town has a willow-ware platter they are willing to sell (as Anne broke the original one she borrowed!), Anne and Diana are off! One misfortune after another happens and soon Anne Shirley is stuck half in the duck house roof in her beautiful new (now ripped up!) dress in a thunderstorm. I laughed the whole way through. While I don’t want to be trapped with Anne, I wouldn’t mind helping Diana try and rescue her! Regardless of my role, this would make for a great story after the fact, for sure.

4 – Anne of Avonlea, Chapter 21: Sweet Miss Lavendar

Daring Anne! You and Diana choose to take the road less traveled and get horribly lost. While this isn’t quite as adventurous as my last few selections, it is definitely the sort of adventure I’d not only love to encounter but am most likely to initiate myself in real life. Lost, but following a trail, this is how Anne and Diana come to Echo Lodge and meet the darling Miss Lavendar. A beautiful cottage in a beautiful setting with two kindred spirits waiting! Plus, they have the most magical tea waiting when Anne and Diana arrive. It’s both heartbreaking and endearing. I immediately fell in love with Echo Lodge just like Diana and Anne, too. It’s quite the real-life fairy tale!

5 – Anne of the Island, Chapter 25: Enter Prince Charming

Call me a sap if you will, but there is a romantic younger part of me who is envious of this moment for Anne Shirley. A romantic connection: Her umbrella breaks in a sudden storm and she is rescued by the man who looks like the Prince Charming of her dreams! He whisks her to a nearby shelter (obviously a beautiful gazebo in a lovely park) and Anne learns Royal Gardner also ACTS like the man of her dreams. This romantic moment is the start of Anne’s real growth, too. It’s pivotal to her romantic futures and development of self. I mean, come on… what young girl didn’t daydream for her Prince Charming?

Bonus – Quelling Philomena’s Woes over Alec and Alonzo

I know, I know– this is cheating. But, this isn’t an individual adventure! It’s a series of incidents across the entirety of Anne of the Island. I think it would be such fun to be Phil’s confidant over her romantic woes. Anne always had such amazing responses to Phil! Younger me would have loved to stay up late gossiping with them over the better match without trying to really influence Phil in any fashion.

Since I haven’t read the books, I don’t have much to contribute to the discussion, but these adventures sound like so much fun, and I love this idea for a post!

    • Jackie B August 26, 2017 at 11:24 am

Thanks, Krysti! At least this gives you an idea of the sort of antics Annie and company get up to. Even more reasons to add this to your TBR. 😉

      • KrystiYAandWine August 27, 2017 at 6:23 pm

Most definitely! I’m actually in a MG mood lately too, which is weird. I’ve never been in an MG mood before. Well, at least not since I was that age. I so wish I could join in on this right now.

        • Jackie B August 29, 2017 at 10:33 am

I can relate to that– my reading level preferences come and go like the wind. Somedays I crave adult, some days MG, some days YA. It’s peculiar and unpredictable. This is why I don’t really schedule my reading. 😉

          • KrystiYAandWine August 29, 2017 at 11:05 am

I used to be a mood reader like that. And then came ARCs. LOL. Now I have a super strict daily schedule. The good thing is I never get in reading slumps anymore. But I definitely miss getting to read more widely like you do!

            • Jackie B August 29, 2017 at 11:47 am

That’s really interesting to me. How do you set up your schedule? How long do you get to read each day? What happens if you get off?

Maybe, actually, that’s quite a bit for here. Perhaps you could write a blog post for us to explain your process? I’m totally curious. But, then again, that might throw off your schedule. 😉

              • KrystiYAandWine August 29, 2017 at 6:36 pm

I have goodreads lists for each month that turn into Excel spreadsheets as the month gets closer to keep me on track. If I get off track then I end up bumping off the books that I wasn’t sent an ARC for, which is a bummer, because sometimes I miss out on reading books that I want to read just for fun.

Hahaha. I might do a blog post sometime to detail it all, but I know a lot of bloggers have a similar process. Spreadsheets are the only way to keep things straight.

                • Jackie B August 29, 2017 at 10:55 pm

Wow! That sounds complicated. I would definitely read that post. I have so much to learn about my book organization skills. Sometimes, I feel like I’m too much like Doug from the film Up.
book book book book SQUIRREL! ………. what was I doing? 😉

                  • KrystiYAandWine August 30, 2017 at 9:38 pm

Hahaha! Oh my gosh. I love that analogy!

  • Krysta August 26, 2017 at 9:31 pm

Oh my goodness. I can’t believe you added Alec and Alonzo. Phil is so ridiculous in the best possible way!! 😀

I’d totally go for the Lady on the Lake adventure. So I could fix things before they go terribly wrong!

    • Jackie B August 27, 2017 at 10:58 pm

Hahaha. Wouldn’t it be fun to stay up late and listen to Phil’s stories? I love that they are just this strange and seemingly imaginary love triangle. I wonder if that was thrown in just for LMM to poke fun at the trope?

That would be a great adventure to join in on! What would you fix? The boat, how Anne interacts with Gilbert, or something else? 😉

      • Krysta August 28, 2017 at 10:29 am

Can I just shove Anne into Gilbert’s arms?

        • Jackie B August 28, 2017 at 5:19 pm

XD If only it worked that way. Unfortunately, I think that’s one of the reasons Anne shied away at first! Silly, stubborn, independent girl. 😉

  • Evelina August 27, 2017 at 9:29 am

I hope you don’t mind if I don’t read the post and SQUEEZE MYSELF INTO THE GIVEAWAY ANYWAY 😀 you know why I’m not reading it lol. #rude anyway huh 😀 But I’m going to read this post, of course, because I don’t see any spoilers 😀 except I’m not reading the 5th one :DDD

Lol that tea party. Sounds like a riot to me. Sounds like a regular tea party these days though :DDD it was such a good story. But I think y favorite one is the one with the platter, where Anne gets stuck in the roof! God that was funny 😀 I had to stop reading to laugh. Absolutely hilarious.

    • Jackie B August 27, 2017 at 11:10 pm

Pft, you are one of the main reasons I made certain this giveaway was international, Gurl! You’ve got to read these books some day. 😉 Perhaps you’ll have the box set WAITING for you! 😀

When you have to stop reading a book to laugh at something, you know the author did something right. I did the same thing! I laughed more in Anne of Green Gables than in the other books thus far– it’s totally worth it.

  • theorangutanlibrarian August 29, 2017 at 12:53 pm

hehehe I loved the tea party so much- that’s one of my favourite scenes of the entire series!!And the concert!! In fact all of these- brilliant list!!

  • Jane @ Greenish Bookshelf August 29, 2017 at 4:59 pm

I’m behind!!!! Haha. Where did August go? I am writing this post as we speak. But I love yours! Oh the adventures of Anne. Hard to narrow it down. I love that the tea party and meeting Josephine Barry especially! Oh and Miss Lavender 🙂 So many great stories to pick from 🙂 Will send my post as soon as it exists!

  • Dani @ Perspective of a Writer August 29, 2017 at 10:51 pm

Hey Jackie! This is so fascinating! I just read a graphic novel of Anne of Green Gables… I downloaded it to read later and read half the book right then, lol. AND THEY PICKED MOST OF THESE SCENES TO FEATURE… haha, so I knew what you were talking about for all of them except Prince Charming. How insane is that? Though your other themed adventures sound fun too! ♥️

    • Jackie B August 30, 2017 at 12:32 pm

No WAY! That’s super cool. I’ll have to check out that graphic novel. Is it the one by Mariah Marsden?

Yeah, the whole Prince Charming scene isn’t until Anne of the Island– the third book. I wouldn’t be surprised if that wasn’t in a graphic novel adaption. I’m glad these inspired you to pick up Anne of Green Gables however! I hope you get to finish it some day.

  • Amanda @Cover2CoverMom September 2, 2017 at 6:11 pm

You picked some wonderful adventures! I could totally see Chapter 18: An Adventures on the Tory Road actually happening to myself as I tend to get myself into sticky situations like Anne lol One of the funniest parts of the series so far I think. One of my favorites parts of AoA was when Anne and Diana stumble upon Echo Lodge and meet Miss Lavendar. Such a charming character 🙂

    • Jackie B September 3, 2017 at 4:53 pm

Miss Lavendar touches my heart. I hope that I can forever be a young soul like her. It’s so beautiful and heart warming!

Oh, I hope you never have to suffer as Anne did stuck in that duck house roof! But the silly situations she and Diana get into make me laugh so hard.
