1 Year Blogoversary!

Death By Tsundoku

Wow. I can’t believe a whole year has passed. Looking back, this year has been an incredible journey, unlike anything I ever could have imagined. I started without a plan or a real clue what I was doing. I just knew that I loved books, and I had a lot to say. Little did I know I’d be embarking on a journey of self-discovery. No, I am not exaggerating. This blog has changed me an been a real shining spot in 2016. And we all know how important that is! (P.S. That link is soooo NSFW.)

The Origin Story

In 2012, I started to get back into reading again. 1-year-killer-angelsI had been an avid reader as a child, constantly hiding under my covers with a flashlight and reading into the wee hours of the morning. I got addicted to series in particular and would read them completely through. All of Boxcar Children were read. I read every book published in the Star Wars Legends universe (at least, all those published before 2000) to the point where my English Teacher told me she was glad I was such an avid reader, but it would nice if I could expand my interests. She introduced me to Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels and my reading completely changed. Suddenly, I realized how immersive a world composed of words could truly be (after all, The Killer Angels is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel) and my life is changed forever.

Yet, in college, I lost my reading momentum.

As a percussion performance student, I spent all my free time practicing. I quickly replaced my reading time with percussion time. I went seven years barely reading more than 5 books a year. The switch was seamless, and I barely noticed. Eventually, I left a full-time music career and got into an office job. I really love my work, and I still play. But now I have more time for the things I’m passionate about in my free time. Like reading.

Death by Tsundoku

In 2011, I started to read regularly again. In 2012, a few of my friends and I got together to start a book club. I found that I enjoyed reading even more when I was able to discuss with my friends. I started to read more. Goodreads became my preferred source of social media. I joined more book clubs. Eventually, I even started a few of my own!

tsundokuBy the time 2015 rolled around, I was reading over a hundred books a year and writing questions regularly for my book clubs. Yet, it wasn’t enough. I had so many thoughts in my head I had to get them out! I was acquiring books more quickly than I could read them. My friends had joked that I was certainly being crushed by all the piles of books around me.  We found the perfect word. From the Japanese — Tsundoku: the act of leaving a book unread after buying it, typically piled up together with such other unread books on shelves, floors, or nightstands.

Thus the idea was born! With the help of some techy-er people than myself (<3 you Ash and DarthGoat) I goy my first blog set up. Now, I was new to the book blogging community at this time. When I started, I had planned on making this more of a personal outlet. I didn’t know anyone outside of Goodreads, and there only in passing. This was supposed to be a small thing, and, well, like all great things it grew to be much more than that.

Lessons Learned

Over the last year, I’ve learned a lot:

Be yourself. Your blog should never become a chore. You should never feel stressed from your blog. If this isn’t how you make your living, keep your expectations appropriate. If you expect too much of yourself this will cause you stress and frustration. Then it stops being fun. Need a break? Take a break. This should be a passion, not a frustration.

Write what you love. Your book reviews should always be in your own voice. Don’t feel like you need to be “smarter” or “more sophisticated” or whatever. We want to know you and your opinions. Do you want to only write reviews? Do it. Want to be involved in memes and tags? Fine. Read-a-thons? Reading challenges? You do you. As long as you write your own voice, you will be happy and find an audience.

The book blogging community is welcoming! Reaching out and making connections with other book bloggers has been the best part of this journey. I’ve found so many like-minded and different-minded friends! It’s great sharing book recommendations, opinions, and even memories.

You get what you give. I didn’t start reaching out to other book bloggers until I hit about the 9-month mark of blogging. I was worried about being welcomed, and I wasn’t certain how to start. Once I took the plunge I found it was easy. Some friends are connections I know will stick around forever, but I also know that I need to give them love to get love. And that’s okay! Book blogger relationships are like all others: People want love and attention. If you share it with them, they will share it back with you.

Habits matter. It’s been critical that I develop habits around blogging. When I read, write reviews, schedule posts… And I haven’t been particularly good about it, honestly. But I’m learning and getting there. Some of my favorite bloggers have the best habits.

Find role models. I have made so many friends in the last few months who have really inspired me in many ways. Amanda at Cover 2 Cover Mom. Naz at Read Diverse Books. Brendon at Reading and Gaming for Justice. Ottavia at Novels and Nonfiction. Danielle at Books, Vertigo, and Tea. There are so many more to list– If I have commented on your blog in the last month, you belong here. Most recently, Evelina at Avalinah’s Books has really gotten me into reading challenges again. Just the kick in the butt I need! Keep your friends close. You never know what they will teach you!

Hopes for Year Two

I have really enjoyed my first year of blogging, and I obviously have my own blogging resolutions:

Expand upon my Between the Lines series. These posts are an aspiration I have to write more about genre, writing trends, and the labels associated with books and writing. I want to deepen my own understanding.

Read less. Review more. I find that over the last two months I have really read a ton, but only written a few reviews. I’m soooo far behind on writing reviews! Not only this, but I’m putting too much pressure on myself to read. I need to let go a bit more.

Develop a bigger book blogger community. Yes, blog hopping takes time. But the discussions I have about books are far more valuable to me than the reviews themselves. I want to develop a stronger sense of community.

Create a book discussion question database. I love book clubs. I’ve started writing book club discussion questions for others to use. However, I feel like this could be easily done for all the books I’ve read. I won’t aim to do it for all, but I want to make it easier for others to start book clubs and make them successful.

THANK YOU

Finally— thank you. Thank you, reader, for being here. For listening to me. For being a part of my journey. I hope that we continue to grow together. Leave a comment below, and I know our relationship will deepen. After all, that’s my goal for next year. Let’s do this together.

Happy Reading,

Jackie B.

Thanks, Poulami! That means a lot to me. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

Hi there, pingback queen! ^_^ happy blogoversarry! Yet in fact, I can’t believe you’ve just been at it a year! I’d thought you’d been doing this for a while, it seems like you’re so seasoned 🙂 well, maybe compared to me – I only started my blog like… at the end of this September?

It’s interesting that my reading history is almost entirely like yours 🙂 I had been a very avid reader as a child, I even once volunteered in NY shook library. But then I started doing sciences in school and decided to go for engineering, so from maybe 15 years and up there was just no time for reading (plus in my spare time I studied Japanese). Then by the middle of university I got back into reading, which was also pretty much 2011-2012. I know I made my Goodreads in 2012 🙂 as for blogging, this year I just started writing more reviews and getting more interest, so I decided that maybe I should start a blog. But, very differently from you, I first started networking and got on Twitter. So I started NY blog with a reasonable amount of people in NY circles. Surprisingly, my first real blog post had like 70 people visit and read – although that has only happened one other time after that – with the post about Senlin ascends. I know what you mean about sensitivity about other bloggers accepting you, or even someone reading your stuff at all! Surprisingly, although I’m not as seasoned as you are, I learned the “do what you want with it” lesson quite quickly – I overexerted myself in like the first month 😀 it’s a good lesson to learn. After you get rid of the need to “go professional” on it, you realize that it’s a lot of fun and you do get to meet a lot of interesting people. I really enjoy talking with you, visiting your blog and having your comments on mine – so far it’s one of the most significant blog friendships for me 🙂

As for the challenges, the Christmas one was fun! But I’m still overdue the wrap up post xD that’s why I was reluctant to join the next one, the one I recommended to you. I still don’t know if I’m joining. But perhaps I should after all. Have you joined it yet?

Then there’s also mount TBR 😀 need to write a post for the challenge as well. Did I tell you about that one?

By the way, what is your job? Very interesting to know you studied music, slightly jealous too 🙂 (I taught myself piano and guitar, also sang in a choir for 5 years. Music is a thing)

    • Jackie B December 30, 2016 at 11:44 pm

I am starting to figure it out, aren’t I? 😀 Pingbacks for days!!!

You studied Engineering AND Japanese?! It makes sense, but it sounds like so much work! No wonder you didn’t have much time for reading. I’m exhausted just thinking about it. Goodreads is really what brought me back in the fold of reading, honestly. It reminded me that books exist and I can enjoy my time with them. It was the combination of that and IRL friends getting me where I am today.

I love that we started our blogs in very opposite ways, even if we got there along the same path. Social media and I are *not* great friends. Twitter frustrates me because I can’t find the dialogue. I am not a huge fan of my opinion falling into the void. But I’m starting to get more connected to it. I’m so impressed you have ~70 views on your first post! You have been learning a long time, even if you haven’t been blogging as long.

I did join Bout of Books! I am looking forward to that readathon, if only to get myself a fresh start. I haven’t made a decision on Mount TBR, but I’m considering that, PopSugar and Book Riot’s Read Harder for 2017. We shall see… I need some time to plan my reading a bit, first!

Today, I am a corporate educator. My music degrees were in percussion performance and music education. I performed and taught for a few years before I realized that life wasn’t for me. Now I work mostly with adults in a corporate environment. It’s not as much fun as being a musician, but I love the stability and flexibility with my time. I still perform with three local ensembles, however. I can’t give that up! 🙂 I would never give up my music.

      • AvalinahsBooks December 31, 2016 at 4:41 am

Yeah, GR does motivate immensely. I remember when I had just joined, they used to have this “read books count” on the homepage. I really miss that. That used to motivate me so much.
As for social media, I guess I know my stuff because, well, I work in digital advertising. And while Twitter basically barely exists in Lithuania (so I had to discover it for myself), half my work is with Facebook and other stuff. I know how to write posts professionally. I don’t do that as much on Twitter just because then it feels like a job. But other than that, I know how it all works. I get paid for that xD
You know, I’m considering joining bout of books after all! I’m going to do a recap post for the past readathon today and outline the things I’m planning to read for this one. Although I’m not quite sure I understand how readathons work yet – there are all these challenge posts, but I don’t always want to do them all. For example, spine poetry – my books are ebooks. Doesn’t work that way :p and I just don’t feel like posting every day and flooding the few followers that I do have 😀 but what I like in readathons is setting goals, although I’m not sure they really encourage you to do that. I still like picking books I’m going to read.
Mount TBR has a Goodreads group if you just want to join it as a normal reader (non-blogger xD) for starters. Less commitment to post, and then the minimum requirement is just 12 books. How did I make it 36… xD I am excited about Mount TBR. Still haven’t posted it for it, if I’m not mistaken.. But maybe I’ll do that after I finish Bout of Books.
What do you teach as a corporate educator? I also have some teaching experience, although that started this year. I have taught a few marketing classes to people even older than me, and it was immensely fun. Especially considering how I got into a university program without any qualifications xD loads of fun.
Yeah, one can never give up music 🙂 although now that I’m blogging, I don’t have as much time for it. But it’s kind of like riding a bike – you don’t forget. You aren’t as good, but you’d still remember even the piece you learned 5 years ago with a little practice. Muscle memory over brains any day, hehe 🙂

        • Jackie B January 3, 2017 at 4:56 pm

I find that groups on Goodreads really motivate me. As I get deeper and deeper into blogging I am spending less and less time in these groups, but that is okay. They are constantly pushing challenges, readathons, and buddy reads. In fact, I only do buddy reads through Goodreads. That’s weird. I should probably do some of those with other bloggers!

That’s cool that you work in digital advertising! I feel like I could never understand social media, but that’s your job! I respect that a lot– it’s a really fast moving industry. You must constantly be having to learn new things.

I’m glad you joined Bout of Books! For my “bookshelf photograph” I took a photo of my Kindle. You make due with what you have, I guess. I love reading challenges, but I need to make certain I don’t overdo it. I want reading to stay fun!

I work in Finance right now which sounds boring. Mostly, I work in Operations, so I make certain all the staff know how to do their jobs. Systems, process, and personal development training are my focuses. I really love it.

How did you get into a university program without any qualifications?! I must know.

          • AvalinahsBooks January 6, 2017 at 7:41 am

Buddy reads are a lot of fun! Yeah, I do enjoy groups as well, but you have to be present there all the time. It’s not that easy to constantly follow xD

Ah, I don’t even know how I got into that university program xD experience and knowing the right people, I guess. It’s more of a certification course, just a semester long, outside of any curriculum. But still! xD

HAPPY 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!!!!! I loved reading all of this, I was nodding the whole time through. I am happy that you are here =)
I share a little of the same experience as you, when I was in college I read only like 1-3 books per year because school consumed my life amongst other things happened. But once I was done with school and also took an office job, I came back to my passion of reading and writing. I completely understand all the motions you probably went through when picking up books again.

I love the book blogging community, I find them to be so welcoming and I think a lot of us feel the same as well..scared to communicate with others but then that one little comment can change the course of those two bloggers communicating for a long time to come.

I think that blog hopping and involving oneself with the community is yes, time consuming but amazing! Through talking with others and reading others reviews/memes/tags/discussions I have found books that I have never heard of and their taste in books.

All in all, I really loved all of this post and I wish you the best in the upcoming year with blogging. I love your username all the more now that I know the true definition of it. Thank you for sharing lovely! Have an amazing new year =D

    • Jackie B December 30, 2016 at 11:28 pm

Thank you so much, Gretchen! That means the world to me. 🙂 I’m happy that *you* are here!

It’s so nice to hear at someone else has a similar life experience with books. I found it spectacular how habits change but passions do not. When I realized my new job would let me read more, I was ecstatic. Jumping into the world of blogging seemed like a perfect next step, and I’m glad I took it. I hope the next year brings even more books, friends, and all sorts of new things. I think I’m finally starting to find my place in the community, too.

    • Jackie B December 30, 2016 at 3:57 pm

Aw, thanks, Liz! I look forward to it as well.
Your blog is inspiring to me because of the diversity of the literature you read. While many people have a theme to their reading, you seem to be like me and read whatever you want. There is such diversity to your books! You are really helping pad out my TBR. 🙂

D’aw. You make me blush! Thank you so much for all those wondrous compliments.
I look up to you because you’re not afraid to try new things with your blog– whether it’s a new theme, or a post idea, or what not. You’re brave and just go for it! You are also great at making connections with other bloggers. It’s getting easier the more I do it, but I struggle to get there. Baby steps, I guess.

      • Books, Vertigo and Tea December 30, 2016 at 4:36 pm

I have found that having the ability to connect with so many wonderful people such as yourself who embrace the same interests has done wonders for me. And it all happened during a time in my life when I needed you all the most. The blog has given me a voice I felt I was losing with my illness. Your continued support is one of the very large reasons I have this now. Thank you 🙂 Sorry for getting gushy on here haha <3

  • Birdie December 30, 2016 at 3:20 pm

I loved this! You said everything I think with perfection. Your lessons learned are so many that I’ve learned too, and I’ve only been solo blogging for 5-6 months. I love this community, and it is so much fun. Congratulations on your blogiversary!

    • Jackie B December 30, 2016 at 11:15 pm

Thanks, Birdie! That means a lot to me coming from you. 🙂 I look forward to building my community even more.

  • Shouni December 30, 2016 at 7:08 pm

Happy Blogiversary Jackie! I absolutely love reading your blog even though I don’t comment much here. I need to take your advice on “Write what you love”. I’m not very good at writing book reviews and I need to stop worrying about whether or not it’s up to par with other reviewers. I also need to build my community a little and I need to blog hop more. Happy New Years! I hope the new year brings many new amazing books.

    • Jackie B December 30, 2016 at 11:19 pm

Exactly! It’s so easy to compare ourselves to our favorite bloggers. Reviews, tags, varieties of posts, graphics– there will always be someone better at something you want to improve. Don’t fret about writing reviews if that isn’t your thing. I love reading your Diversity Spotlights! I find sooooo many great books to add to my TBR.
Here’s to 2017: a great year of books and building community. 🙂

      • Shouni December 31, 2016 at 11:17 am

Thank you! That makes me feel a lot better. I think I’m better at mini reviews than full fletched ones so I need to do more of those.
        😀 I have high hopes for 2017!

  • Marie @ drizzleandhurricanebooks December 31, 2016 at 5:04 am

Happy Blogoversary, Jackie!! And congratulations. I am so, so happy you love blogging so much, and all of your advice is on point. It’s so important to do what we love, and not to be afraid to be ourselves in this. It’s sometimes hard because there are SO many bloggers out there and I am very prone to comparison, so it’s hard not to think about what others are doing, but in the end, we are blogging for us 🙂 Wishing you all the best for the new year to come, and all the great books to read for 2017 😀

    • Jackie B December 31, 2016 at 6:43 pm

Thank you so much, Marie! It’s been quite a year, and I’m so thankful to have found a welcoming community (including yourself). #SFATW has really helped me make connections in other places, too. Lin and I have definitely gotten to know each other much better than I have with other bloggers– I’ll have to make this a tradition. 🙂 Wishing you *also* all the best. I hope all your books in 2017 are winners. 😀

  • whatthelog January 2, 2017 at 10:34 am

Congrats!! I’ve loved reading your blog and getting to know you, and I hope 2017 will continue that!

I love the idea of a book discussion question database – I’m in the midst of planning a book club, and that would make my life so much easier!! And I want to get to know other book bloggers too – I’m still a little bit shy about the whole thing because idk, some people seem like ‘real’ bloggers, but I’m just a little university student! But yes, 2017 will be the year of confidence!!

    • Jackie B January 2, 2017 at 10:37 pm

D’aw, thanks Wendy! I completely concour. I adore reading you posts, and I can’t wait to see what 2017 bring both of us.

Pft, you are a fully-fledged book blogger! It wouldn’t be as impressive if there weren’t people you looked up to, but you are definitely in the top ranks as far as I’m concerned. Be brave! We will be there to hold you up.

I’ve been thinking about starting a series of posts on starting a book club. The benefits, the strategies, the questions, etc. Would that be something you’re interested in? No pressure either way! Your comment just reinforced my thoughts.

      • whatthelog January 3, 2017 at 10:07 am

Oh, thank you 🙂 I really appreciate that.

And yes absolutely!!! I have no idea where to start with my one, so any advice would be wonderful 😀

        • Jackie B January 5, 2017 at 8:41 am

Brilliant! That was just the kick in the butt I needed. Now, to ponder some post ideas… So much for getting any work done today!

          • whatthelog January 5, 2017 at 1:54 pm

Fab! And who needs work when you’ve got blogging 😉

  • Laila@BigReadingLife January 2, 2017 at 10:03 pm

Happy Blogiversary! I’m delighted to have discovered your blog in the past couple of months. I wholeheartedly concur with your thoughts on blogging about being yourself and reaching out. It’s truly a remarkable community of people here in Book Blogging Land. May 2017 be a wonderful reading and blogging year for you!

    • Jackie B January 2, 2017 at 10:31 pm

Thanks, Laila!! That means a lot to me. I really respect your opinion.

Yes! It is important to make yourself vulnerable and be an open member of the blogging community. I can’t wait to see where 2017 takes us both! Happy new year!

  • Jasmine January 3, 2017 at 4:45 pm

Happy Blogiversary Jackie! Love your lessons learned! Good luck to another year and have a lot of fun! 🙂

    • Jackie B January 5, 2017 at 8:42 am

Thanks, Jasmine! I really appreciate that. It’s great to hear my lessons have been useful to people. 😀

  • Amanda @Cover2CoverMom January 3, 2017 at 5:01 pm

Congrats on your 1 year blogoversary Jackie! Such a huge milestone in a blogging career. Mine is actually coming up towards the end of February. This year has flown by!

I am so deeply honored to be mentioned in this post. You have no idea how much that meant to me. The other bloggers you are inspired by are all bloggers I look up to as well, so it is wonderful to be in such good company.

Like you, I was an avid reader as a child. Some of my favorite childhood authors were Gail Carson Levine, Karen Cushman, Sharon Creech, and of course J.K. Rowling. Once I hit high school, my reading switched to required reading, which was ok by me. I thankfully had wonderful literature teachers who instilled a great love for the classics in me. In college my reading (fiction) was almost non-existent. I was a 19 year old kid with a newborn baby who was determined to get through school, so reading had to go on the backburner. Some quarters I was taking 22 credit hours. Once I graduated college in 2009, I was able to return to the world of books and haven’t looked back since.

The lessons that you have learned over your first year blogging are spot on! I too have learned these lessons for myself. I also LOVE your aspirations for your second year. I cannot wait to see what you have in store for us in 2017!!!

    • Jackie B January 6, 2017 at 4:25 pm

It’s crazy to think we are already in 2017! Thank you soooo much for sharing your origin story! I love hearing how people got started. And the parallels in our story just prove that we’re twinsies on some levels. 🙂 I can’t believe that you had a newborn and was full-time in college! I respect that so much. I honestly don’t think I Could do it.

I look forward to seeing what you do for your 1 year blogoversary! Bring it on, 2017. Amanda and I are waiting for you. 🙂

Ahhhh shucks! Luckily I didn’t do it alone. I had lots of support from my family and my boyfriend (now husband). It wasn’t the easiest path, but it all worked out for me. Not every “teen mom” story is a success story, so I am very fortunate.

2017 is going to be good to us Jackie, I just know it!

Happy 1 year! I am so behind on posts please excuse my lateness DX My one year anniversary is here as well and isn’t it weird to think we’ve been doing this for a whole year! I love your origin story and your plans for this year. I can’t wait to connect more with you and read some amazing books that you recommend seriously you add so many books to my TBR but I love it, I mean my bookshelf and wallet don’t but I do 😀

Thanks!! No problem on lateness– I’m just happy to see you noticing. 🙂 It’s super weird to think we’ve been doing this for a whole year. I feel like the community I’ve developed all started around the same time I did, too, so we are all in the same place from a blog-development perspective. That’s really interesting to me.
I look forward to seeing where you take your blog in 2017, a well! So many books, so little time. 🙂
