#ThanksgivingReadathon 2018 Annoucement

October 29, 2018

It’s hard to believe that we’re already closing in on the end of 2018! This past weekend, my husband and I were already buying holiday gifts for the family. Where did the time go?! Thankfully, this is my favorite time of year– and it’s time for the (now annual!) #ThanksgivingReadathon!

For the third year running, I am hosting the #ThanksgivingReadathon! This is a stress-free, low-key way to get caught up with your reading and prioritize me-time during a family-packed week. After all, we’re getting dangerously close to the end of those year-long reading goals, right?

How it Works

Dates: Wednesday, November 21st – Sunday, November 25th

Participate in any or all of the following:

  • Read as many books as you can in those 5 days.
  • Use the hashtag #ThankgivingReadathon to share your participation and progress using Twitter and other social media sites.
  • Publish a Sign-Up Post between Monday, November 19th and Wednesday the 21st with your readathon and TBR goals on whatever site you choose.
  • Publish a Wrap-Up post between Monday, November 28th and Wednesday, November 31st sharing your readathon victories!
  • Participate in the Bookstagram Challenge* by posting a photo which aligns with the daily prompt throughout the week. Don’t forget the hashtag #ThanksgivingReadathon!
  • Link Up your sign-up and wrap-up posts.
  • Comment on all the wonderful #ThanksgivingReadathon blog posts, Twitter updates, and Instagram photos from all the participants!

#ThanksgivingReadathon Giveaway

That’s right! Participation in the #ThanksgivingReadathon will gain you bonus entries for this awesome giveaway. This year’s giveaway is themed to get you geared up for some cozy winter reading:

The giveaway will be US and Canada Only** and will include the following items:

  • Maroon luxury velvet throw
  • Stoneware Mug
  • Tea bag rest
  • Box of assorted teas
  • Book of your choosing up to $20 USD

There will be many ways to enter, including posting your sign-up and wrap-up posts and participating in the Instagram Challenges. Keep an eye open for the giveaway Rafflecopter link on November 19th!

Bookstagram Challenges

This year, Ottavia and I wanted to add an additional interactive element: Instagram challenges! It was so much fun chatting with everyone last year during the readathon. But, we learned that not everyone wants to participate in Twitter. Instagram was an obvious next step.

Both of us aspire to be better at participating in Bookstagram posts. What better way to meet both these goals than by having an Instagram Challenge? This can also be a great way to bring the family you’re visiting/hosting into the readathon. Have them hold books, help you select what to include, or, well, ask them to leave you in peace for 15 minutes while you get your shot together. XD

Participation is super easy! Each day, post a photo to your Instagram page which follows the prompt. Include the #ThanksgivingReadathon and link-up your posts for more giveaway entries. I cannot wait to see what your amazing photos will look like.

And yes, the Instagram challenge starts the day before the readathon. Why? Because we need time to prepare our TBR, obviously! XD Plus, this gains you one extra way to enter the giveaway.

While I have mentioned Ottavia a few times above, you might have noticed that I’m hosting solo this year. Ottavia @ Novels and Nonfiction needs to take some time away from blogging and is unable to help host. But she is here in spirit!  Regardless, I strongly encourage you to stop by Ottavia’s blog and share some love. I know she’ll appreciate it!

I couldn’t be more excited to host this readathon for the 3rd year running. It’ll be great to see your posts and participate in conversations with you on Twitter, Instagram, and your blogs. Hosting this readathon alone will be a challenge, but I couldn’t be more excited to engage with you all. I hope that you will be in to participate in this low-key readathon. I cannot wait to read with you!

*For those of you who aren’t regular book bloggers, Bookstagram is what the book blogger world calls our little corner of Instagram. We’re so cool.
**Sorry international friends! Keep an eye open for another giveaway coming up for your chance to get in on the swag!

What do you think?

  • Will you be participating in the #ThankgivingReadathon? Why or why not?
  • Are you excited about the giveaway? What excites you the most?
  • What was the last readathon you participated in? Why that specific readathon?
  • What social media sites will you be using this Thanksgiving? I want to follow your fun!

So glad to see you hosting this again Jackie!! This was actually my first readathon ever last year. This positive experience is why I participated in a couple of Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reviewers readathons too. And because of all of these readathons it started me on writing TBR posts that I follow to this day!! So such a historic thing for me. <3

!!! Really?! Wow. This is a huge compliment. I’m so glad Ottavia and I could introduce you to the world of readathons. They provide a lot of joy for me, honestly. They help me prioritize reading and ME time, which I often tend to neglect when things get crazy. My busiest family time of the year starts during Thanksgiving, so ME time is important.

I look forward to following your participation, Dani. 🙂 I hope this is just as positive as last year!

The Bookstagram challenges look like fun! I doubt I’ll be posting on my blog, but you can bet I’ll try to be active on Twitter and Bookstagram for this week! I’ve never taken part in a readathon though, so we’ll see if I don’t fall behind.

    • Jackie B October 30, 2018 at 5:35 pm

Yay!!! I’m super exciting that you will be trying to participate. This is a super loy-key readathon. Honestly, you could just make a goal of “I want to read for 60 minutes over all 5 days.” Nothing crazy– pick a reasonable goal which won’t make you stressed. This is just about having some ME time during a busy week. I always stink at prioritizing me time… O_o

Are you traveling to Indiana and Ohio for Thanksgiving? I hope you and David get in some good audiobooks on your drive. I’m trying to follow the list of books that I created it for 2018, but some of them are by UK authors, which makes it hard for me to understand the audio books. I’ve noticed that many audio books with British narrators go at a really fast pace, meaning I have a hard time understanding what they’re saying. Thus, I have to read those books in paperback format. I wanted to catch up while driving, but I’m not sure that’s going to happen. maybe I’ll adjust my fat fiction choice for November to Puddin’ by Julie Murphy. I’m pretty sure that one’s out in audio book.

    • Jackie B October 31, 2018 at 10:53 am

We always do Columbus for Thanksgiving and Evansville for Christmas. I need to get on requesting our audiobooks from the library! We do listen to audiobooks when we drive. It can be a challenge to come up with books we both want to listen to. Not because we have such different tastes, but because we are such mood readers!

I haven’t discovered British narrators who I struggle with in most situations yet. Dan Stevens has a quiet voice, which means I have to focus quite a bit to understand him, even with my audio cranked up. Also, Jim Dale is amazing, but as soon as I get sleepy (David does most of the driving) I cannot understand him any longer. Oops.

Are you guys traveling for Thanksgiving?

      • Grab the Lapels October 31, 2018 at 11:14 am

I’ve noticed that it’s a certain type of English book, such as those by Austen or Pym, in which the narrator reads so fast. I believe that was the style. I’ve listened to Dan Stevens and Imogen Church, and they both speak much more slowly.

        • Jackie B November 5, 2018 at 9:51 am

Ahh. I will have to listen to these via audiobook, then. I’ve only run into quiet and slow narrators. I’ll keep an eye out.

      • Grab the Lapels October 31, 2018 at 11:14 am

Oh! And yes, we’re going to Michigan for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

        • Jackie B October 31, 2018 at 10:23 pm

Do you have your audiobooks yet?! 😉

          • Grab the Lapels November 1, 2018 at 8:55 am

I think I’m going to get Puddin’ by Julie Murphy from the library.

            • Jackie B November 1, 2018 at 3:44 pm

I look forward to hearing what you think of the audiobook. I really enjoyed the audiobook for Dumplin’, but I know other people struggled with Eileens Steven’s interpretation. This book has new narrators (as Willowdean isn’t a narrating voice), but I’ve heard great things overall.

  • Lashaan Balasingam @ Bookidote November 3, 2018 at 7:23 pm

Really cool readathon to host, Jackie, and I hope it’ll go wonderfully for everyone who decides to participate! 😛 Do you have particular books queued up for this? 😀

    • Jackie B November 5, 2018 at 9:27 am

It’s super fun. I love the excuse to read, spend time with my blogger friends, and spread joy throughout the blogosphere! I haven’t solidified my TBR for the week yet, but I have these following potentials: Fence: Volume 1, Lady Mechanika Volume 1, and The Lumberjanes: Volume 2 for graphic novels. Starship Troopers, The Stars My Destination, East and Julie of the Wolves as my novels. No non-fiction right now. But I do have quite a few ondeck for November. I obviously won’t be able to read all of these, but the culling won’t happen until much closer.

      Will you be joining up?

      • Lashaan Balasingam @ Bookidote November 5, 2018 at 10:50 am

Some really intriguing picks there! Hopefully you’ll have a good time with them. 😀

Unfortunately, I can’t. I won’t do well in these kinds of readathon since I can’t allocate as much time to read “as much as possible” because of other things like seminars and work in the way hahah

I look forward to your progress though! 😀

        • Jackie B November 5, 2018 at 11:09 am

That’s reasonable– School quite hampered my reading for fun. I can relate — though, it has been a few years! XD

Thanks for cheering me on. I appreciate the support. 🙂

  • Evelina @ AvalinahsBooks November 4, 2018 at 6:48 am

Wow, this is big! You’re even hosting a giveaway! Awesome 🙂 I somehow managed to miss the fact that you’ve hosted it before xD whoops.

    • Jackie B November 5, 2018 at 8:57 am

Hahaha. That’s okay! I imagine this often slips the radar of my international friends. While many countries have Thankfulness holidays, this is one of the biggest American holidays. It’s my personal favorite, actually. 🙂

I hope that you’ll be participating!!! I’d love to have an excuse to connect with you again. 🙂 I’ve been soooo bad at that lately.

  • Sabrina November 11, 2018 at 7:29 pm

Really excited for this! I’m planning to participate with my Instagram account. But what do you mean by linking up the sign up and wrap up posts? How do I do that?

    • Jackie B November 13, 2018 at 9:12 am

I’m glad you’ll be joining, Sabrina!!! If you want to participate in writing a sign-up or wrap-up post, I’ll be providing a Link Up in my own “sign up” and wrap-up posts. This means you can copy the link from your post into the link up form, along with your name, and other people can easily access your posts. It’s just a fun way to increase traffic and connect with the people who are also participating.

Any sort of post is welcome! Since you’re following with Instagram, I encourage you to either use the TBR post, or a separate one you’ve made up, as the “sign up” post. As for the wrap up, you’re welcome to either link to the completed reads photo or, again, a post you’ve made up. Hopefully, you’ll gather some new followers through this! 🙂

I cannot wait to see what you’re reading Sabrina. Welcome to the readathon!!! 🙂

  • Molly @ Molly's Madness November 15, 2018 at 2:55 pm

I am so excited to do this again! When I joined last year it was my first readathon EVER. And even though it wasn’t very successful, I really love the community and it’s such a great time of the year to connect with other bloggers (oh, and catch up on some reading goals).

I JUST started a bookstagram, so I will …try… to use that during this readathon, but I will FOR SURE be doing it on my blog 🙂 I am soooo excited that you’re hosting again!!

  • Molly @ Molly's Madness November 15, 2018 at 3:00 pm

I am so excited that you are hosting this again!! It was the first (and so far only) readathon I’ve ever participated in and I really LOVED the chance to connect with this reading community. It’s such a great time of the year for this 🙂 Even though it wasn’t overly successful for me last year, I think it will be a great way for me to check in with my reading list. And I love a good challenge 🙂

I just started a bookstagram, so I will TRY doing that challenge (it seems like a great way for me to get used to a bookstagram account!). But (of course) I will also be connecting with my blog.

    Thank you for hosting!

    • Jackie B November 16, 2018 at 6:01 pm

Yay!! And I’m glad you’re coming back to join up, Molly!! What an honor to not only be hosting the first readathon you’ve participated in, but also one you want to come back to. 🙂 I’m sorry you didn’t achieve all your goals last year, but this is meant to be low-key. Hopefully, you’ll feel successful this year! I find this is a good way to ensure I don’t lose reading momentum going into the end of the year. So many reading challenges! So little time.

I’m using the Bookstagram challenge as a way for me to try and stay connected with my account. I’m *so bad* at using it! It’s an out-of-sight-out-of-mind thing for me. Perhaps we’ll both get into some good habits?

      Welcome to the readathon, Molly!

      • Molly @ Molly's Madness November 18, 2018 at 12:49 pm

I sure hope so! I need the help getting used to it. I’m not much of a poster on social media, so it could get interesting!!

        • Jackie B November 21, 2018 at 4:45 pm

So far, I’m not doing so well. XD But, once the Thanksgiving decorations really come out I know I’ll have more photos to share. And perhaps a few more things to share on Twitter as well. One can only hope. XD Good luck!

  • Amanda @Cover2CoverMom November 18, 2018 at 1:50 pm

I cannot believe it is already Thanksgiving week! Craziness! I am really going to try hard to participate in this readathon Jackie. I am happy to see it is Wednesday through Sunday. I really think I’ll be able to knock a few books out & focus on reading since my kids are off school & will not have any sporting events 🙂 Now I just need to come up with a TBR… Will you be reading The Last Unicorn during the readathon?!

Participate in the discussion!
